Children’s dental emergencies often happen during play: tumbles on wet docks, bike falls, playground bumps or a ball to the face. Others build up quietly, like a toothache that becomes severe or a swollen gum from an infected baby tooth. Knowing what to do in the first minutes, and which situations need a hospital instead, can make a stressful moment more manageable.
If your child is hurt or in pain at Long Point, call our Port Dover office once serious injuries are ruled out. The team can discuss the situation and arrange an assessment based on urgency and availability.

First minutes
Reassure your child and look for signs of head injury such as confusion, vomiting or drowsiness. Check breathing and whether they can swallow normally. Large or spreading swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or a possible jaw fracture call for emergency medical care. Your calm tone helps your child settle.
Rinse gently with water and apply firm pressure with clean gauze or cloth to bleeding areas. A cold compress can reduce swelling. Collect broken tooth pieces. For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown, keep it moist in milk and call the dentist immediately. Do not replant baby teeth.
Common emergencies
Baby teeth that are knocked out are usually not replanted, as this can harm the developing adult tooth. Pushed or loosened baby teeth still need assessment. For adult teeth, timing is critical, especially if a tooth is knocked out or displaced. Tell the office your child’s age and which tooth was hurt.
A toothache that keeps a child awake, swelling of the gum or face, or a pimple on the gum may indicate infection. Fever or a child who seems unwell needs prompt attention. Do not place aspirin on the gum. Ask the pharmacist or physician about child-appropriate pain relief.
At the office
The dentist will examine the teeth, gums and lips, check the bite and may take X-rays to see roots and developing teeth. Expect questions about how and when the injury occurred. Treatment may involve smoothing a chip, repositioning a tooth, splinting or managing an infection.
The team explains each step in simple words and checks in with your child. If treatment is involved, comfort options may be discussed. Not all care must happen in one visit; sometimes stabilizing the problem first and planning the rest later is best for a frightened child.
Follow-up
An injured tooth may darken, become loose or develop infection later. Keep follow-up appointments and report swelling, pain or colour changes. Provide soft foods for a few days if advised. Help your child brush gently around the area to keep it clean while it heals.
Mouthguards for sports, helmets for biking and scooters, and supervision around docks, pools and playgrounds can reduce injuries. Teach children to avoid running on wet surfaces. If your child has had trauma before, ask whether extra protection is advisable.
Planning your appointment
After ruling out emergencies that need a hospital, call our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929. Describe your child’s age, what happened and which teeth are affected.
Bring any knocked-out adult tooth in milk, broken fragments and a list of your child’s medicines and allergies.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Replanting a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Keep your child comfortable, control any bleeding and call the dental office for advice and an assessment.
Act quickly. Hold the tooth by the crown, rinse briefly if dirty and try to place it back or keep it in milk. Contact a dentist immediately, since timing affects the chance of saving it.
Go to an emergency department or call 911 for head injury, trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling or bleeding you cannot control. Dental care can follow once your child is safe.
It is wise to call. Injuries can affect the root or nerve without obvious signs. The dentist can advise whether an exam is needed and what changes to watch for in the coming weeks.
Ask your pharmacist or physician about child-appropriate pain relief and dosing. Do not place aspirin or tablets on the gums. Call the dental office to arrange an assessment of the cause.
A knocked-out adult tooth has the best chance when handled well and seen fast. Long Point patients can learn the first steps and call our Port Dover office.
Falls, boating bumps and sports collisions can loosen, push or break teeth. Long Point patients should call our Port Dover office promptly after a mouth injury.
