Children fall, collide during play and sometimes develop sudden toothaches or swelling that seems to appear overnight. Seeing a child in pain or bleeding from the mouth is upsetting, but a calm response helps them feel safer. Knowing a few basic first steps for common problems can make a real difference to comfort and, in some cases, to whether an injured tooth can be saved.
Hillcrest parents can call our Port Dover office for guidance when a child has a dental emergency. The team will ask what happened and what symptoms you are seeing, help decide how urgently your child needs to be seen and tell you what to do and bring in the meantime.

Assess the situation
Before focusing on the teeth, check for signs of a head injury, such as confusion, vomiting, unusual drowsiness or any loss of consciousness. Difficulty breathing or swallowing, heavy bleeding and facial swelling that is spreading quickly also need emergency medical care. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if any of these are present, and deal with the teeth afterwards.
Typical children’s dental emergencies include knocked-out or loosened teeth, chipped or broken teeth, cuts to the lips and gums, toothaches and swelling around a tooth. Some, such as a knocked-out adult tooth, are time-sensitive and need help immediately. Others can safely wait for a scheduled appointment. The team can help you judge which situation you are facing.
Injured teeth
If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not try to put it back, because that can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding and call the office. If an adult tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown, rinse it briefly if dirty, try to replace it gently or keep it in milk, and seek care immediately.
For chipped or broken teeth, rinse the mouth gently with water, save any pieces you can find and use a cold compress on the face to limit swelling. Teeth that are loose or pushed out of position should never be forced back into place. Call the office promptly to describe the injury so the team can arrange an appropriate assessment.
Pain and swelling
Rinse with warm water and floss gently to remove any trapped food, which is sometimes the cause of the pain. Children’s pain relief may help when used according to the label for your child’s age and weight. Do not place aspirin or any pain medicine directly on the gums, since it can burn the tissue. Then call the office to arrange an appointment.
Swelling around a tooth or in the face can be a sign of infection. Mild, localized swelling should be assessed promptly by the dentist. Swelling that spreads quickly, reaches the eye or neck or comes with fever and difficulty swallowing needs emergency medical care. Do not delay getting that help while you wait to hear back about a dental appointment.
After the emergency
Injured teeth may darken, become sensitive or develop an infection weeks or even months after the accident. Attend any follow-up visits the dentist recommends. Watch for colour changes, swelling, a bump on the gum or new pain, and call the office if you notice any of these. Injuries to baby teeth can also affect the adult teeth growing beneath them.
Have your child wear a mouthguard for sports, supervise young children on stairs and playground equipment and make sure car seats and seat belts are properly fitted. Discourage chewing on pencils, ice or toys. These steps cannot prevent every accident, but they do reduce the chance of serious dental injuries and the stressful trips that follow.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office to describe your child’s symptoms or injury. The team will advise on first steps and how soon your child should be seen, so you know whether to come in right away, wait for an opening or head to a hospital instead.
If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, bring it in milk or saliva and mention this the moment you call, since timing matters.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Replanting a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth developing underneath it. Control bleeding with gentle pressure, comfort your child and call the office for advice about whether and when your child should be examined by the dentist.
As soon as possible. The chances of saving the tooth are best when it is replanted quickly, ideally within minutes. Keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva on the way and seek dental care immediately, or go to a hospital if you cannot reach the office.
Call the office promptly so the swelling can be assessed. If it spreads quickly, affects the eye or neck, or your child has difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care right away rather than waiting for a dental visit.
Age-appropriate pain relief may help when it is used according to the label. Do not put medicine directly on the gums. Call the office to describe the pain and arrange an assessment, since the cause of the toothache still needs to be found.
It depends on the size of the chip and whether the nerve is affected. The dentist will look at the tooth and may smooth it, repair it or simply keep an eye on it. Call the office to arrange an appointment and describe how the chip happened.
Time matters when an adult tooth is knocked out. Hillcrest residents can learn how to handle and store the tooth and why to call our Port Dover office at once.
