Children’s dental emergencies often happen in a split second: a tumble on the playground, a hockey stick to the mouth or a toothache that flares at bedtime. Knowing whether the affected tooth is a baby tooth or an adult tooth, and what to do in the first few minutes, can shape the outcome and ease some of the worry for everyone involved.
If something happens to your child’s teeth in Hagersville, check for serious injuries first, then call our Port Dover office. The team can talk you through immediate steps and discuss how quickly your child should be seen before you set out.

First, check safety
After a fall or blow, look for signs of a head injury, such as drowsiness, vomiting, confusion, unusual behaviour or a severe headache. Check whether your child can breathe and swallow normally and whether the jaw opens and closes. Any of these concerns needs emergency medical care first. Dental treatment can wait until your child is safe.
Children take cues from adults, so speak calmly and reassuringly. Rinse the mouth gently with water and press clean gauze or cloth on bleeding areas. A cold compress wrapped in a cloth can ease swelling on the lip or cheek. Try to find any broken pieces or a lost tooth while you comfort your child.
Baby or adult tooth?
If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not try to put it back, because that can damage the adult tooth forming underneath. Control bleeding and call the office. Baby teeth that are pushed in, loosened or chipped also need a dental check to look for effects on the developing teeth, even when your child seems fine.
For a knocked-out adult tooth, time matters. Pick it up by the crown, not the root, rinse briefly if dirty and gently place it back in the socket if your child can cooperate, or keep it in milk. Call right away. Chipped or loosened adult teeth also need prompt assessment to protect the nerve.
Toothache and swelling
Rinse with warm water and gently floss around the sore tooth to remove trapped food. Children’s pain relief suited to their age and weight, given as labelled, may help while you arrange an appointment. Do not place tablets against the gum. Note when the pain started and whether hot, cold or chewing makes it worse.
Facial swelling, fever, or a bump on the gum near a decayed tooth can signal infection. Call the office promptly. If swelling spreads quickly, reaches the eye or neck, or your child has difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to emergency care immediately. Infections in children can progress quickly and should not be left to wait.
The visit and after
The dentist examines the injured area, checks nearby teeth and may take X-rays to look at roots and developing teeth. Treatment might involve smoothing a chip, repositioning or splinting a tooth, treating infection or simply monitoring. The dentist explains what is being done in words your child can understand and tells you what to watch for at home.
Injured teeth sometimes change colour, become tender or develop a gum bump weeks later. Keep follow-up appointments, even if your child seems fine. Offer soft foods for a few days, keep brushing gently and avoid rough play until advised. If you notice new swelling or pain, call the office rather than waiting until the next scheduled check.
Planning your appointment
Once serious injuries are ruled out, call our Port Dover office to describe what happened, which tooth is affected and your child’s symptoms. The team will advise on first steps and the timing of a visit.
Bring any tooth or fragments in milk, your child’s health card, and a list of medications or allergies they have.

Do not try to put it back. Control any bleeding with gentle pressure and call the office for advice. The dentist will want to check the area and the adult tooth developing underneath, especially if the injury was forceful.
Age is a rough guide; most front adult teeth arrive between about six and eight. Adult teeth are larger and often have ridged edges when new. If you are unsure, call the office and describe it, and keep the tooth in milk meanwhile.
Go to emergency for breathing or swallowing difficulty, swelling spreading toward the eye or neck, uncontrolled bleeding, or a head injury with drowsiness, vomiting or confusion. These need medical care before any dental treatment.
Children’s pain relievers given exactly as labelled for their age and weight may help temporarily. Avoid placing tablets on the gum. Pain relief does not treat the cause, so arrange a dental assessment as soon as possible.
Colour change can mean the nerve was affected. It is not always an emergency, but it should be checked. The dentist will assess the tooth and decide whether monitoring or treatment is needed for your child.
For a knocked-out adult tooth, protect the root and choose the right storage liquid. Hagersville patients can also see why baby teeth follow different rules.
A fall, collision or sports injury can loosen, push or break teeth. Hagersville patients can learn first steps and when to call our Port Dover office.
