Caring for Forestville patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for ForestvilleStay calm, act quickly
Children’s dental emergencies range from a sudden toothache to chipped or loosened teeth, cuts to the lip and teeth knocked out during play. Your calm response helps your child settle while you work out what happened. Whether the injured tooth is a baby tooth or an adult tooth affects what you should do next, so it helps to know the difference before anything happens.
If something happens to your child’s teeth in Forestville or nearby, check for serious injury first and then phone our Port Dover office. The team can talk you through the immediate steps, help judge how urgent the situation is and discuss when your child can be seen.

First moments
Comfort your child and look for signs of a head injury, such as confusion, unusual drowsiness, vomiting or a severe headache, as well as any trouble breathing. These need emergency medical care right away. Once you are confident there is no serious injury, look gently inside the mouth to see which teeth, gums or lips have been affected.
Press clean gauze or a cloth on bleeding gums or lips for several minutes. A cold compress can ease swelling. Look for any knocked-out tooth or broken pieces. Handle a permanent tooth by the crown only and keep it moist in milk, or have an older child hold it in their cheek if they can do that safely.
Baby or adult tooth?
If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not try to put it back, because doing so can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Keep the area clean and call the dental office for advice. Loose, chipped or pushed-in baby teeth should also be checked, since an injury to a baby tooth can sometimes affect the permanent tooth below.
A knocked-out permanent tooth is very time-sensitive. If you can, gently rinse it and place it back in the socket, then have your child bite softly on a cloth to hold it. If that is not possible, keep it in milk and call the dental office immediately. Chipped or loosened adult teeth also need prompt assessment.
Toothache and swelling
Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and check for food stuck between the teeth, removing it gently with floss. Give a children’s pain reliever as directed on the package for their age and weight. Avoid placing aspirin or any other tablet directly on the gum. Call the office to describe the pain and arrange an assessment.
Swelling of the gum or face, a fever or a child who seems generally unwell may point to an infection that is spreading. If swelling affects the eye, makes swallowing hard or spreads quickly, seek emergency medical care immediately. Otherwise call the dental office promptly, because infections in children can progress faster than many parents expect.
After the emergency
Injured teeth can change colour, become sensitive or develop an infection weeks or even months later. Watch for darkening, a small bump on the gum, swelling or new pain, and keep every recommended follow-up appointment. The dentist may take X-rays to check the roots and any developing adult teeth that could have been affected by the injury.
Mouthguards for sports, helmets for biking and skating and supervision on play equipment all help reduce dental injuries. Teach children not to chew on hard objects or open things with their teeth. Keeping the office number handy at home and in the car means you can call quickly from anywhere around Forestville when an accident happens.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office as soon as possible after a dental injury or sudden pain. Describe your child’s age, what happened and their symptoms so the team can advise on the next steps.
Bring any knocked-out tooth or fragments kept in milk, along with a list of your child’s medications, allergies and any relevant health conditions.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Replanting a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth developing underneath it. Keep the area clean, control any bleeding with gentle pressure and call the dental office for guidance on whether your child should be seen and when.
Act quickly. Hold the tooth by the crown, rinse it gently and try to place it back in the socket, or keep it in milk if that is not possible. Then call the dental office immediately for guidance on what to do next.
Go to the emergency department for a head injury with confusion or vomiting, difficulty breathing or swallowing, bleeding that will not stop or facial swelling that is spreading quickly. These situations need immediate medical care before any dental treatment.
It may not be an emergency, but it should still be checked. Call the office to describe the chip and how it happened. The dentist can decide how soon your child should be seen and whether anything needs protecting in the meantime.
A children’s pain reliever can be given as directed on the package for their age and weight. Avoid placing tablets directly on the gum. Call the dental office to arrange an assessment, since pain relief only eases symptoms and does not treat the cause.
