When something happens to a child’s tooth

Stay calm, check for serious injury, then call.

Children fall, collide and bite down on unexpected things. A dental emergency might be a chipped or knocked-out tooth, a cut lip, a sudden toothache that keeps them awake or swelling in the face. Your first job is to comfort your child and check for signs of a more serious injury. Then, describing what happened clearly helps the dental team advise you on what to do next.

Families in Fishers Glen can call our Port Dover office for guidance when a child has a dental problem. The team will ask about the injury or symptoms, whether the tooth is a baby or adult tooth, and discuss how soon your child should be seen.

First steps

Safety comes first, teeth second.

  1. Check for serious injury

If your child lost consciousness, is drowsy, confused, vomiting, has neck pain or cannot stop bleeding, seek emergency medical care first. Breathing or swallowing difficulty and fast-spreading swelling also need immediate medical attention. Once those concerns are ruled out, you can focus on the teeth and call the dental office for advice. Keep your child calm and still.

  2. Basic first aid for the mouth

Rinse the mouth gently with water and apply pressure with clean gauze or cloth to any bleeding. A cold compress on the outside of the face can reduce swelling. Look for any broken pieces or a missing tooth. Give pain relief suitable for your child’s age and weight only as directed on the package, and avoid placing tablets against the gum.

Common emergencies

Different problems call for different responses.

Knocked-out and broken teeth

Do not put a knocked-out baby tooth back in, as this can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse briefly if dirty and try to place it back in the socket, or keep it in milk. Bring any broken pieces in milk or water and call the office as soon as possible.

Toothache and swelling

A toothache with swelling, fever or a bump on the gum may signal an infection and should be assessed promptly. Pain that wakes your child at night is also worth calling about. Keep a note of when symptoms started and whether they are getting worse. Facial swelling that spreads quickly toward the eye or neck needs emergency medical care.

At the appointment

The dentist will examine the area gently and explain each step.

  • What the dentist checks

The dentist will look at the injured teeth and surrounding tissues, check whether teeth are loose or displaced, and may take X-rays to see the roots and developing adult teeth. They will ask how the injury happened and about your child’s health history. Treatment may include smoothing a chip, bonding, stabilizing a tooth or managing infection.

  • Helping your child cope

An injured child may be frightened and upset. Stay close, use a calm voice and let the team know if your child is especially anxious. The dentist will explain what they are doing in simple language. If extensive treatment is needed, it may be staged so your child can cope, while urgent needs are addressed first.

Afterwards

Follow-up matters, even when the tooth looks fine.

Care at home

Offer soft foods for a few days and help your child keep the area clean with gentle brushing. Follow any instructions about pain relief or rinsing. If a tooth was splinted or bonded, avoid biting into hard foods with it. Keep your child away from contact sports until the dentist says it is safe to return.

Watching for changes

Injured teeth can change colour, become sensitive or develop an infection weeks or months later. Watch for a darkening tooth, swelling, a bump on the gum or new pain, and call the office if any appear. The dentist may schedule follow-up visits to monitor healing and the development of adult teeth below an injured baby tooth.

Children’s dental emergency questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Should I put a knocked-out baby tooth back in?

No. Replanting a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth developing beneath it. Keep your child comfortable, control bleeding with gentle pressure and call the dental office for advice on what should happen next. Keep the tooth to show the dentist.

My child chipped a tooth but is not in pain. Is it urgent?

A small chip without pain is often not an emergency, but it should still be checked. Call the office to describe it. If the break is large, there is pink in the centre or pain develops, let the team know promptly.

When should I go to the hospital instead?

Go to the emergency department for head injury with drowsiness, vomiting or confusion, uncontrolled bleeding, trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling that spreads quickly. Dental care can follow once your child is medically safe. Bring any tooth pieces with you.

How do I know if a toothache is serious?

Severe pain, swelling, fever or pain that wakes your child at night should be assessed promptly. Mild discomfort that comes and goes may be less urgent but still needs an exam. Call the office to describe the symptoms.

Can an injured baby tooth affect the adult tooth?

Yes, injuries to baby teeth can sometimes affect the developing adult tooth underneath. The dentist may recommend follow-up visits and X-rays to monitor development and catch any changes early. Let the team know if the injured tooth darkens or the gum swells between visits.
