Children’s jaws and teeth change rapidly between the ages of about six and twelve, as baby teeth fall out and adult teeth arrive. An early orthodontic assessment looks at how the bite and jaws are developing and whether anything, such as a crossbite, severe crowding or a habit, may benefit from attention while growth is still underway.
Families in Vanessa can have their child’s bite checked during visits to our Port Dover office. Most children assessed early do not need treatment right away. The value is in knowing what to watch, when to recheck and whether a referral to an orthodontist would be helpful at some point.

Why look early
Certain problems, such as a crossbite that shifts the jaw to one side, an underbite, or front teeth that stick out and are prone to injury, may be easier to address while the jaw is still growing. Early identification gives families time to understand the issue, plan ahead and decide whether intervention could make later treatment simpler or shorter.
For many children, the assessment confirms that development is on track, or that a minor issue is best monitored rather than treated. Waiting is often the right choice. The dentist will explain what they see, what they recommend watching, and roughly when the next check should happen, so nothing important is missed along the way.
Signs to mention
Mention early or very late loss of baby teeth, crowded or overlapping teeth, teeth that do not meet when biting, a jaw that shifts when your child closes, front teeth that stick out, or difficulty chewing. Teeth that come in far out of position or spaces that seem too large or too small are also worth pointing out.
Ongoing thumb or finger sucking after the adult front teeth arrive, tongue thrusting, mouth breathing, snoring or grinding can all affect how teeth and jaws develop. Share these details with the dentist. Some habits may need gentle guidance, and breathing or sleep concerns may also be worth discussing with your child’s physician or another health provider.
The assessment
The dentist examines how upper and lower teeth meet, checks jaw alignment and movement, looks at spacing and crowding, and notes how baby and adult teeth are progressing. They may watch your child bite, open and close, and swallow. The visit is usually straightforward and comfortable, with nothing more than a normal dental exam involved.
X-rays may be recommended to see developing adult teeth below the gums and check whether they are in position, missing or impacted. Photos or models may also help record the bite. These records make it easier to track changes over time or share information if a referral to an orthodontist is recommended at some later stage.
Next steps
In many cases, the dentist will simply recommend monitoring at regular checkups. If an early issue is identified, options might include a space maintainer after early tooth loss, habit guidance or a simple appliance. The dentist will explain the purpose of any recommendation, the time commitment involved and what would happen if you waited instead.
If more complex orthodontic treatment may be needed, the dentist may suggest a referral to an orthodontist, who specializes in tooth and jaw alignment. You can ask about the timing of that referral and what information will be shared. You remain in control of decisions about whether and when to proceed, and you can take time to think it over.

Many dental organizations suggest a first orthodontic look by around age seven, when some adult teeth have arrived. However, the dentist may notice concerns at any routine checkup and recommend an assessment whenever it seems useful.
No. Most children assessed early do not need treatment immediately. The purpose is to identify issues, monitor development and decide whether any early step would help. Many children simply continue with regular checkups while the dentist keeps an eye on things.
Sometimes early treatment can reduce the complexity or length of later treatment, but it does not always eliminate the need for braces. The dentist or orthodontist will explain what early treatment can realistically achieve for your child.
X-rays may be recommended to see developing adult teeth and check their positions. The dentist will explain why they are suggested and how they contribute to understanding your child’s growth and development. Images are only taken when they add useful information.
Not always. Baby teeth often shift and spacing changes as adult teeth come in. Mention your concerns at your child’s checkup, and the dentist will explain whether anything needs monitoring or attention at this stage of growth.
When a baby tooth is lost too early, a space maintainer can hold room for the adult tooth. Vanessa parents can learn when one helps and how to care for it.
Some children need more than encouragement to drop a thumb or soother habit. Vanessa families can learn which signs matter and when extra support may help.
