Ask about growth before assuming treatment is needed

An early look can clarify what should be watched next.

Crowding, a changing bite or teeth appearing in an unexpected position can make parents wonder whether braces are already needed. Early assessment helps distinguish a finding to monitor from one that merits a timely orthodontic opinion. The first review is not automatically the start of treatment.

Delhi families can discuss developing teeth at our Port Dover office. Describe what you have noticed, including chewing difficulties or earlier tooth loss, and ask whether referral to an orthodontist is appropriate.

Know when to ask

Use early assessment to understand development, without assuming appliances must begin.

Understand the purpose of an early assessment milestone

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic check by age seven, or earlier when a problem is recognized. This is an assessment milestone, not a rule that every child begins appliances at that age. Ask how it fits your child’s current dental care.

Describe a concern when you notice it

Raise a concern when you notice it rather than waiting for a particular birthday or every baby tooth to be lost. Describe changes in position, jaw contact or habits and any difficulty chewing or cleaning. A dental examination can help establish whether the next useful step is monitoring or a separate orthodontic opinion.

Review the whole bite

Review the developing bite beyond the appearance of the front teeth.

  • Consider spacing, tooth development and previous care

Assessment considers how upper and lower teeth meet, the space available and the teeth still developing. Relevant history includes early loss of baby teeth, previous appliances and oral habits. Ask what the clinician can establish from the examination and whether additional records are needed.

  • Use your child's own findings to guide the decision

A photograph or comparison with a sibling may help you explain the concern, but it cannot show the complete bite or development. Ask how your child's examination findings guide the recommendation. Their growth and dental history determine whether observation, further records or a treatment discussion is appropriate at this point.

Discuss the recommendation

Understand what observation or early intervention is intended to achieve.

Give monitoring a defined purpose and review date

If monitoring is advised, ask which development is being followed and when it should be checked again. Observation is more useful when the reason and review arrangements are clear, rather than leaving a family unsure whether the concern has been dismissed.

Distinguish an early treatment goal from later needs

If consultation or early treatment is recommended, ask which problem it addresses now and why that timing is appropriate. Clarify what may still need attention as more teeth emerge or growth continues. A focused early goal should be understood without assuming it eliminates the possibility of later orthodontic treatment.

Coordinate continuing care

Keep the orthodontic plan connected with examinations, hygiene and cavity care.

  1. Clarify responsibility for bite monitoring and routine dentistry

An orthodontic opinion does not replace regular examination, hygiene advice and cavity care. If more than one clinician is involved, clarify who monitors each part of the plan and how relevant information is shared with your consent.

  2. Plan attendance and report changes between reviews

Discuss likely appointment commitments and review intervals before choosing treatment, including where each visit would take place when several clinicians are involved. Plan travel from Delhi around the agreed sequence. Report new symptoms or changes in chewing between reviews so timing can be reconsidered using your child's current situation.

Planning your appointment

Bring a bite-development question from Delhi.

Tell our Port Dover team what has prompted your concern and whether an orthodontist has already assessed your child. Mention any current appliance or earlier tooth removal.

Ask what the visit can establish and whether further referral is likely to be discussed. A clear next step may be monitoring, information gathering or a separate specialist consultation.

Understanding an early orthodontic review

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does assessment at age seven mean braces at age seven?

No. The purpose is to evaluate development and identify concerns at an appropriate time. Many discussions involve observation or later review. Ask what the findings mean for your child rather than assuming assessment commits them to an appliance.

Should I wait until all the baby teeth are gone?

Some developmental questions are best reviewed while baby and permanent teeth are both present. Raise a concern with the dental team and ask about orthodontic assessment. Waiting for every baby tooth to be lost is not a universal starting rule.

Can apparently straight teeth still need a bite review?

Yes. Appearance from the front does not fully show how the teeth and jaws relate. An assessment can consider function, spacing and development. Explain any chewing difficulty or change in the way your child closes their teeth.

What if the recommendation is only to monitor?

Ask what is being watched, when it will be reassessed and which changes should prompt earlier contact. A monitoring plan should have a purpose and follow-up arrangement so you understand how the developing concern remains under review.

Will early treatment prevent the need for later treatment?

That cannot be guaranteed. Early care may address a specific problem while later growth or alignment still needs attention. Ask the treating clinician to explain the immediate goal and the possibility of additional stages before deciding.
