Seeing below the surface

X-rays show what an eye exam alone cannot.

Much of what happens in the mouth is hidden between teeth, under fillings, inside roots and beneath the gums. Dental X-rays help the dentist find decay, infection, bone loss, impacted teeth and other problems that cannot be seen during a visual exam. Digital imaging allows pictures to be viewed on screen shortly after they are taken.

Walsh patients have X-rays taken at our Port Dover office when they are clinically useful. The dentist will explain why images are recommended, what type is needed and what they show. If you have recent X-rays from another office, sending them ahead may avoid repeating them.

Why they matter

Images guide diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Problems hidden from view

Cavities between teeth, decay beneath old fillings, abscesses at root tips, bone loss from gum disease, cysts and teeth that have not erupted can all be identified on X-rays. Many of these cause no symptoms in their early stages. Finding them early often means simpler, less costly treatment and fewer surprises later, such as a sudden toothache on a weekend.

Planning treatment accurately

Before root canal treatment, extractions, implants or orthodontic care, X-rays show root shape, bone levels and the location of nerves and sinuses. This information helps the dentist plan safely and explain likely outcomes and risks before treatment begins. It also provides a record against which healing can be compared at later follow-up visits after treatment.

Types of images

Different images answer different questions.

Bitewings and periapical films

Bitewing X-rays show the crowns of back teeth and are especially useful for detecting decay between teeth and checking bone levels along the gums. Periapical images capture the whole tooth from crown to root tip, helping with abscesses, root problems and specific symptoms such as pain when biting. Each type is chosen to answer a particular question.

Panoramic and other views

A panoramic image shows both jaws, all the teeth and the surrounding structures in a single picture. It is useful for wisdom teeth, development in children and general screening. Other views or 3D imaging may be suggested for complex planning such as implants, and in some cases referral to another facility may be needed for that imaging.

Safety and frequency

X-rays are taken when the benefit justifies them.

  • Keeping exposure low

Digital dental X-rays use a low dose of radiation, and protective measures such as a thyroid collar may be used. Frequency is based on your age, risk of decay, gum health and symptoms, not a fixed schedule applied to everyone. Ask the dentist about the reasoning whenever you have questions, and share any concerns you have about exposure.

  • Pregnancy and special situations

Tell the team if you are or might be pregnant. Necessary X-rays can sometimes still be taken with precautions, while routine images may be postponed until later. Let the team know about any recent imaging at a hospital or another dentist, which may be useful and may reduce the need for new pictures at this visit.

Records and sharing

Your images are part of your health record.

Transferring X-rays between offices

If you are new to the practice or seeking a second opinion, ask your previous dentist to send recent X-rays to our Port Dover office before your visit. This may reduce the need for repeat images and gives the dentist a history to compare against. It can also save time on the day, which helps if you are fitting the trip from Walsh around work.

Understanding your results

Ask the dentist to show you your X-rays on screen and explain what they reveal. Seeing the images can make findings easier to understand and help you take an active part in treatment decisions. You can also ask for copies if you need them for another provider, such as a specialist you are being referred to.

Planning your appointment

X-rays at your visit from Walsh

When booking at our Port Dover office, let the team know if you have had X-rays elsewhere in recent years. The dentist will recommend imaging only where it adds useful information to your care.

Mention pregnancy, recent hospital imaging or any concerns about radiation so they can be discussed before any images are taken.

X-ray questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Are dental X-rays safe?

Digital dental X-rays involve a low radiation dose, and precautions are used to minimize exposure further. The dentist recommends them when the diagnostic benefit outweighs the small risk, and will explain the reasoning if you ask.

How often will I need X-rays?

Frequency depends on your risk of decay, gum health, age and symptoms. Some people need them more often than others, and the interval may change over time. The dentist will explain the reasoning for your particular schedule.

Can I refuse X-rays?

You can discuss your concerns openly. The dentist will explain what information might be missed without images and how that could affect diagnosis and treatment. The decision is then made together, with full information on both sides.

Can my old X-rays be sent to you?

Yes, ask your previous office to forward them before your appointment. Recent images can be helpful for comparison and may reduce the need for new ones, depending on their quality, their age and what needs to be checked.

Do children need X-rays?

Sometimes, depending on age, cavity risk and development. Images can show decay between baby teeth and how adult teeth are forming beneath them. The dentist will explain when they are recommended and why for your child.
