Much of what matters in dental health is hidden: decay between teeth, infection at the tip of a root, bone loss from gum disease, impacted wisdom teeth and the position of developing adult teeth in children. Dental X-rays let the dentist see these areas, so problems can be found early and treatment planned with far more confidence.
Patients from Vanessa may be offered X-rays during exams at our Port Dover office when there is a clear reason for them. The dentist decides how often images are useful based on your age, history and current concerns, and is always happy to explain why a particular image is being suggested.

Why images help
Decay often starts where teeth touch each other, out of sight even under bright light. Infections can form at the root tip without obvious symptoms. Gum disease can quietly erode the bone that holds teeth in place. X-rays show these changes, often before they cause pain, which means treatment can usually be smaller and less complicated than it would be later.
Before a root canal, extraction, implant or crown, X-rays help the dentist understand the shape of roots, the condition of bone and the location of nearby structures. That information supports safer, more predictable treatment. After treatment, follow-up images can confirm healing and help catch any developing issue before it grows into something larger and harder to treat.
Types of X-rays
Bitewing X-rays show the crowns of back teeth and are especially good for detecting decay between teeth and checking bone levels. Periapical X-rays show a whole tooth from crown to root tip and the surrounding bone, which helps when a particular tooth is painful, injured or being considered for root canal treatment. Both are small and quick to take.
A panoramic image captures the whole mouth in one view, including the jaws, sinuses and developing or impacted teeth. It is often used for wisdom tooth assessment and orthodontic planning. In some situations, more detailed 3D imaging may be recommended, which may involve a referral, and the dentist will explain why it is needed for your case.
Safety
Digital X-rays generally use less radiation than older film systems, and dental X-rays involve low doses compared with many other medical images. The dentist follows the principle of taking only the images that are needed. Protective measures such as a thyroid collar may be used where appropriate. Ask any questions you have about exposure and safety.
Tell the team if you are pregnant or might be. Routine X-rays are often postponed, though images may still be appropriate if there is a dental emergency or infection that needs diagnosis. If you have had dental X-rays recently at another office, letting the team know may avoid repeating them unnecessarily, since records can often be transferred with your consent.
The appointment
A small sensor is placed in your mouth, and you bite gently to hold it while the image is taken in a few seconds. For panoramic images, you stand or sit while the machine moves around your head. If you have a strong gag reflex or a small mouth, tell the team so they can adjust technique and take breaks.
Digital images appear on screen almost immediately, so the dentist can review them with you during the visit. Ask them to point out what they see, such as a shadow that indicates decay or a change in bone level. Images become part of your record, helping compare changes over time and plan future care sensibly.
Planning your appointment
If you are booking an exam at our Port Dover office, mention any recent X-rays taken elsewhere and any pain or concerns, so the dentist can decide which images would genuinely be useful at that visit.
Let the team know if you are pregnant or may be, and mention any concerns you have about X-rays before they are taken.
Before you book

Dental X-rays use low doses of radiation, and digital systems typically reduce exposure further. The dentist recommends images only when they are likely to provide useful information. If you have concerns, ask the team to explain the type of image and its purpose.
It depends on your age, risk of decay, gum health and current symptoms. Some people need images more often, while others with stable mouths need them less frequently. The dentist will base the schedule on your individual needs.
You can discuss any concerns and decline, but the dentist may not be able to fully diagnose certain problems without them. They will explain what information would be missing and any limitations that creates for planning your care.
Sometimes. Children’s X-rays are recommended based on their risk of decay, development and specific concerns, such as checking erupting teeth. Children are not imaged on a fixed schedule without a clinical reason, and the dentist can explain each recommendation.
Tell the team. Routine X-rays are often delayed until after pregnancy, but if there is a dental emergency, an X-ray may still be appropriate with protective precautions. The dentist will discuss the risks and benefits with you.
A routine checkup finds problems while they are small. Vanessa residents can see what an exam covers, how X-rays are decided and how often to visit Port Dover.
