Caring for Turkey Point patients at our Port Dover office

Many dental problems develop where the dentist cannot see directly: between teeth, under old fillings, at the root tips and in the bone. X-rays provide that missing view. Digital X-rays capture images on a sensor and display them on a screen, making it easy for the dentist to show you what they see.
Patients from Turkey Point having exams at our Port Dover office may be advised to have X-rays depending on their history and needs. If you have recent images from another office, mention them when you book.

Why X-rays are taken
Bitewing X-rays show the back teeth and are useful for detecting decay between them. Periapical images show the whole tooth and surrounding bone, helping assess abscesses, root problems and injuries. Panoramic images give a broad view of the jaws and are often used for wisdom teeth and treatment planning. The dentist chooses the type based on what needs checking.
The frequency of X-rays depends on your cavity risk, gum health, age and symptoms. Someone with frequent cavities may need images more often than someone with very low risk. The dentist aims to take only what is needed to make sound decisions. Ask why a particular X-ray is recommended if you are unsure.
Safety
Dental X-rays use a low level of radiation, and digital sensors typically require less exposure than older film methods. The dentist follows guidelines to keep exposure as low as reasonably achievable. A protective apron or collar may be used. If you have concerns about radiation, discuss them openly with the dentist.
If you are pregnant or might be, tell the team before any X-ray. Routine images may be postponed, while urgent ones might still be taken with extra precautions if they are needed for diagnosis. Children may need X-rays at intervals appropriate to their growth and risk, which the dentist will explain.
Having X-rays taken
A small sensor is placed in your mouth and you may be asked to bite gently on a holder. The X-ray unit is positioned next to your face, and you hold still briefly while the image is captured. Some people find the sensor uncomfortable or trigger a gag reflex; let the team know so they can adjust and work quickly.
Digital images appear on screen almost immediately. The dentist can enlarge areas and point out decay, bone levels or other findings. This makes it easier for you to understand recommendations. Ask questions about anything you see, such as shadows or dark spots, and what they might mean for your care.
Sharing records
If you live part of the year in Turkey Point and have a regular dentist elsewhere, ask that office to send recent X-rays. The dentist can review them and decide whether new images are needed. This helps reduce unnecessary exposure and provides a valuable comparison over time.
Comparing current and previous images can show whether a spot is changing or stable, how bone levels have shifted and how past treatment is holding up. Keep track of where you have had dental care so records can be gathered when needed. You can also request copies of your own images.
Planning your appointment
When booking with our Port Dover office, let the team know when your last X-rays were taken and where. They can request copies so the dentist can review them before your appointment.
Mention pregnancy, a strong gag reflex or any previous concerns about X-rays so the team can plan accordingly.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Dental X-rays use low radiation doses, and digital systems generally reduce exposure further. The dentist only recommends images when they provide useful diagnostic information.
It depends on your risk, history and symptoms. Some people need images every year or so, others less often. The dentist will explain the recommendation.
You can discuss concerns and decline, but the dentist may not be able to diagnose some problems without them. Ask what information would be missed.
Yes. Ask your previous office to transfer recent images. The dentist will review them and decide whether new ones are needed.
Tell the team beforehand. They can adjust positioning, work quickly and use techniques that may reduce gagging.
