Every dental service for Silver HillSeeing what eyes cannot
Much of what affects your teeth happens out of sight: decay between teeth, infection at a root tip, bone loss from gum disease, impacted wisdom teeth or cracks under old fillings. Dental X-rays give the dentist a view of these areas so problems can be found and treatment planned with more confidence. Digital images can be viewed on a screen almost immediately.
When you visit our Port Dover office from Silver Hill, X-rays are recommended only when the information they provide is needed for your care. The dentist considers your age, history and symptoms, and you are always welcome to ask why a particular image is being taken.

Why they are taken
Bitewing images show the back teeth and are useful for detecting decay between teeth and checking bone levels. Periapical images show the whole tooth, from crown to root tip, and can reveal infection or root problems. Panoramic images show the entire jaw, including developing teeth and the jaw joints.
Someone with frequent cavities or active gum disease may need images more often than someone with a long history of healthy teeth. Children may need X-rays to monitor developing teeth. New symptoms, such as pain or swelling, often prompt a specific image of the area concerned.
Safety
Dental X-rays involve a low level of radiation, and digital sensors generally require less exposure than older film methods. The dental team follows safety practices, including taking images only when needed and positioning the sensor carefully to avoid repeats. A protective cover may also be used where appropriate.
Let the team know if you are or might be pregnant. Routine X-rays may be postponed, while images needed for urgent care may still be considered with appropriate precautions. Mention any previous radiation treatment to the head or neck, as it can be relevant to your dental care.
Taking the image
A small sensor is placed inside your mouth, and you may be asked to bite gently on a holder to keep it steady. The X-ray unit is positioned near your cheek and the image is captured in a moment. If you have a strong gag reflex, let the team know so they can adjust the approach.
Digital images appear on a screen shortly after they are taken. The dentist can enlarge areas, point out findings and compare them with previous images to see changes over time. Ask the dentist to show you what they see, as it can help you understand the recommended treatment.
Sharing records
If you have had X-rays taken recently at another office, ask them to send copies. The dentist can review these images to see whether they meet current needs, which may reduce the need for new ones. Older images are also helpful for comparison when monitoring slow changes like bone loss.
Your X-rays become part of your dental record and help track your oral health over the years. Each time a new image is taken, it can be compared with earlier ones. If you move or see a specialist, copies can be shared with your permission so your care continues smoothly.
Planning your appointment
If you are a new patient travelling from Silver Hill, ask your previous dental office to send recent X-rays before your appointment. This can help our Port Dover team review your history in advance.
Let us know if you are pregnant, have a strong gag reflex or have had head or neck radiation before any images are taken.

Dental X-rays use a low level of radiation, and digital imaging typically involves less exposure than older film. They are taken only when needed for diagnosis or treatment planning, and safety practices are followed.
It depends on your oral health, age and risk of problems. Some people need them more often than others. The dentist will recommend X-rays based on your individual needs rather than a fixed schedule.
You can discuss your concerns and ask why an image is being recommended. Declining may limit what the dentist can diagnose. The team can explain the risks and benefits so you can make an informed decision.
Often, yes, if they are recent and of good quality. Ask your previous office to send them. The dentist will review them and decide whether additional images are needed. Sending them ahead saves time.
X-rays can reveal cavities between baby teeth and show how adult teeth are developing. The dentist considers a child’s age and risk when deciding whether and when images are needed.
A regular checkup looks for decay, gum changes and early warning signs. See what an exam includes at our Port Dover office and how Silver Hill patients prepare.
