Caring for Renton patients at our Port Dover office

Much of each tooth sits below the gum, and cavities often begin in spots that are hidden from view. X-rays let the dentist see between teeth, under fillings, around roots and into the surrounding bone. Digital images appear on a screen almost immediately, so they can be reviewed with you during the visit.
At our Port Dover office, images are recommended based on individual need rather than taken automatically. Renton patients who have questions about why a particular X-ray is suggested, how often they need imaging or what the images show are encouraged to ask at any point during the appointment.

Why images are taken
X-rays can reveal decay between teeth or beneath existing fillings, bone loss from gum disease, infections at root tips, impacted teeth, cysts and the development of adult teeth in children. They are also used to plan treatments such as root canals, extractions and implants, where seeing root shape and bone is important for safe planning.
The dentist decides which X-rays to take and how often based on your age, history of decay, gum health, symptoms and any planned treatment. Someone with frequent cavities may need images more often than someone with low risk. You can always ask why an X-ray is being suggested and what it may show. Questions are welcome.
Types of X-rays
Bitewing X-rays show the crowns of upper and lower back teeth together and are useful for finding cavities between teeth. Periapical images show a whole tooth from crown to root tip and the surrounding bone, which helps assess infection, injury or a painful tooth. These smaller images are often used to look closely at one area of concern.
A panoramic image captures both jaws, all the teeth and surrounding structures in one picture. It can be helpful for checking wisdom teeth, jaw problems or overall development. The dentist will explain which image type is planned and what it is meant to show. Not every patient needs every type of image at each visit.
Safety and comfort
Digital dental X-rays use a relatively low dose of radiation. Even so, images are taken only when they are likely to provide useful information. Protective measures may be used. Tell the team if you are pregnant or might be, so the dentist can consider whether imaging should be adjusted or postponed for now. Safety comes first.
A sensor is placed in your mouth for some images, which can feel bulky. If you have a strong gag reflex, a small mouth or sensitive areas, let the team know. They can try different positions or techniques. The imaging itself usually takes only seconds. Breathing slowly through the nose can help reduce gagging a lot.
Reviewing results
Digital images can be enlarged on a screen, which makes it easier to point out areas of concern. Ask the dentist to explain what they see, whether something needs treatment or monitoring and how it compares with previous images. Understanding your X-rays can help you make informed decisions about any recommended care. Ask to see them.
If you are new to the practice, bringing recent X-rays from a previous dentist may reduce the need to repeat images. If you need to see a specialist, your images can often be shared. Ask the office how to request a copy of your records if needed. Sharing images can save time for everyone involved.
Planning your appointment
X-rays are usually taken during an exam at our Port Dover office when the dentist recommends them. Phone 519-583-2929 to book, and mention any recent dental images taken elsewhere or by a specialist.
Let the team know if you are pregnant, have a strong gag reflex or have had imaging recently at another office.

Digital dental X-rays use low radiation doses. The dentist recommends them only when the information is likely to be helpful. Let the team know about pregnancy or other health concerns so imaging can be planned with care.
It depends on your oral health and risk factors. Some people need images more often than others. The dentist will recommend a schedule based on your individual needs, which may change as your oral health changes.
You can discuss any concerns with the dentist. They will explain why images are recommended and what might be missed without them. The decision is made together with you, and your concerns will be taken seriously.
Sometimes, to check for cavities between teeth or the development of adult teeth. The dentist considers a child’s age and risk before recommending images, and will explain the reasons to you as a parent before any images are taken.
Ask the office about requesting your records. Copies can be useful if you see another dentist or specialist, since they can reduce the need for repeat imaging. The team can explain how records are released and what information they will need from you.
