Many dental issues hide between teeth, under existing fillings or below the gumline. X-rays allow the dentist to see decay in these areas, check bone levels around teeth, look at roots and spot infections or developing teeth. Digital sensors capture images that can be viewed on screen and stored with your records for comparison over time.
Normandale patients may have x-rays taken at our Port Dover office as part of a new patient exam, a routine checkup or an assessment of a specific concern. The dentist will explain why images are recommended and what they show.

Why images help
X-rays can show cavities between teeth, decay under old fillings, bone loss from gum disease, abscesses at root tips, cracked roots, impacted teeth and changes in the jaw. They also help plan treatments like root canals, implants and extractions by showing root shape and nearby structures.
The frequency of x-rays depends on your age, risk of decay, gum health and symptoms. Someone with frequent cavities may need images more often than someone with a stable history. Pain, swelling or injury can prompt targeted images. The dentist will explain the reasoning behind any recommendation.
Types of images
Bitewing images show the upper and lower back teeth together and are useful for detecting cavities between teeth and checking bone levels. Periapical images capture an entire tooth from crown to root tip, helping the dentist examine a specific tooth or the area around it.
A panoramic image shows the whole mouth in a single view, including both jaws, sinuses and developing wisdom teeth. Some situations call for additional imaging, which may be arranged elsewhere if not available in the office. The dentist will explain the purpose of any image requested.
Safety
Digital dental x-rays use a small amount of radiation. Images are recommended based on need rather than routine at every visit. Protective measures and careful technique help limit exposure. You can ask how often x-rays are planned and why, and the team will explain how risks and benefits are weighed.
Tell the team if you are pregnant or might be, since non-urgent images may be postponed. Mention any previous x-rays from another dentist, which might reduce the need for repeat images. If you have concerns about imaging, discuss them before the images are taken.
Your records
The dentist reviews the images on screen and may show you areas of concern. Seeing a shadow of decay or bone loss can help you understand the recommendation. Ask questions about what you see, including what changes might be monitored rather than treated straight away.
Digital images can be compared over time to detect gradual changes. If you move between dental offices or see a specialist, images can often be shared with your consent. Keep the team informed if you have had imaging elsewhere so your record stays as complete as possible.
Planning your appointment
If you are a new patient from Normandale, let us know when your last dental x-rays were taken and where. We can request copies with your permission to avoid unnecessary repeat images.
Mention pregnancy, recent imaging or any concerns about x-rays when you book so the team can plan accordingly.

Non-urgent images are often postponed. If imaging is needed for a dental problem, the dentist will discuss the reasoning and precautions with you.
Often, yes, with your consent. Sharing recent images can reduce repeat imaging. Let the office know where your last x-rays were taken.
