Much of what matters in dental health happens out of sight: between teeth, beneath old fillings, at the tips of roots and in the bone that holds teeth in place. Digital X-rays capture images of these areas so the dentist can find decay, infection, bone loss and other problems that would otherwise go unnoticed until they caused symptoms.
When Langton patients visit our Port Dover office, the dentist recommends X-rays based on individual need rather than a fixed routine. If you have recent images from another office, sharing them can help avoid unnecessary repeats and give the dentist a useful baseline for comparison over time.

Why they are used
Cavities often start between teeth where they cannot be seen in the mirror. Decay can also hide under existing fillings or crowns. Infections at the tips of roots may not hurt at first. X-rays help the dentist detect these issues early, when treatment is often simpler, less invasive and more comfortable for the patient involved.
X-rays show the level of bone supporting each tooth, which is essential for diagnosing and monitoring gum disease. They also reveal impacted wisdom teeth, developing adult teeth in children, cysts and the shape of roots before procedures such as extractions or root canal treatment. The type of image chosen depends on what needs to be seen.
Types of images
Bitewing X-rays show the crowns of upper and lower back teeth together and are especially useful for finding cavities between teeth and checking bone levels. Periapical X-rays capture an entire tooth from crown to root tip, helping to diagnose infections, root problems and the condition of the surrounding bone in a specific area of concern.
Panoramic images show the whole mouth, including the jaws, sinuses and developing or impacted teeth, in a single picture. They are useful for broader assessments, such as planning wisdom tooth removal or reviewing a child’s development. In some cases, three-dimensional imaging may be recommended or referred out for detailed planning of implants or complex surgery.
Safety and frequency
Digital dental X-rays use low doses of radiation, and the area exposed is small. Protective measures may be used, and the team takes only the images needed to answer clinical questions. If you are pregnant or think you might be, tell the team before any X-ray is taken so the dentist can decide whether it can be postponed or adapted.
How often you need X-rays depends on your age, risk of cavities, gum health, symptoms and dental history. Someone with frequent cavities or gum disease may need images more often than someone with a stable, healthy mouth. Ask the dentist why a particular X-ray is being recommended and what they hope it will show about your teeth.
Records and results
Digital images appear on a screen within moments, so the dentist can often show you what they see. Ask them to point out areas of concern, compare them with healthy teeth and explain any findings in plain language. Seeing the image can make it easier to understand why a treatment has been recommended and what the options are.
If you are new to the practice or have had recent X-rays elsewhere, request that your previous office send copies. Comparing older and newer images helps the dentist judge whether something is changing or stable. Likewise, if you need a referral to a specialist, your images can usually be shared with them to support planning.
Planning your appointment
When booking an exam at our Port Dover office, mention whether you have had recent X-rays at another practice. The team can explain how to request copies before your appointment, which may help avoid repeating images.
Tell the team if you are pregnant, have had recent radiation-based imaging or have concerns about X-rays so they can discuss options.
Before you book

Dental X-rays use low doses of radiation and focus on a small area. The dentist recommends images only when the information is needed for diagnosis or treatment planning. Protective measures are used as appropriate to minimize exposure further.
Many problems, such as cavities between teeth, early bone loss and root infections, do not cause pain at first. X-rays help find them early, when treatment is often simpler. The frequency is based on your individual risk.
Tell the team if you are pregnant or might be. Routine X-rays may be postponed, while images needed for urgent problems can be taken with appropriate precautions. The dentist will discuss the benefits and timing with you.
Usually, yes. Ask your former office to send copies, or let our team know where your records are and we can explain the request process. Recent images help the dentist review your history and may reduce the need for repeats.
Bitewings show the back teeth close up and are good for finding cavities between teeth. Panoramic X-rays show the entire mouth and jaws in one view and are useful for assessing wisdom teeth, development and broader concerns.
Regular checkups find problems while they are small. Langton patients can see what a routine exam covers, how often to book and how to get the most from it.
