Caring for Bloomsburg patients at our office in Port Dover

Seeing below the surface

Imaging is most useful when it is chosen for a clear reason.

Many dental problems are hidden from view. Decay can start between teeth, infection can form at the tip of a root and bone can be lost gradually around the teeth without obvious symptoms. Dental X-rays help the dentist see these areas so that problems can be found earlier and treatment planned with more confidence about what lies beneath.

At our Port Dover office, Bloomsburg patients can ask why a particular X-ray is being recommended and what it is expected to show. The dentist decides on imaging based on your history, symptoms and risk, rather than taking the same set of images for everyone at every single visit.

Why imaging

Each type of image answers a different question.

Problems an exam cannot see

X-rays can reveal decay between teeth and under existing fillings, infection around root tips, cysts, bone loss from gum disease, impacted wisdom teeth and developing teeth in children. They also help the dentist evaluate a tooth before a crown, root canal or extraction. Without imaging, some of these conditions would only be found once they started causing pain.

Different views for different questions

Bitewing images show the back teeth and the bone between them, which is helpful for spotting decay. Periapical images capture whole teeth from crown to root tip. Panoramic images show both jaws in one view. The dentist chooses the type that best answers the clinical question, and you can ask which one is being taken and why.

Is it needed?

Imaging is matched to your individual situation.

  • How frequency is decided

How often X-rays are recommended depends on your age, decay risk, gum health, dental work and symptoms. Someone with frequent cavities may need imaging more often than someone with a long record of stable health. If you have concerns about how frequently X-rays are taken, raise them, and the dentist will explain the reasoning in your case.

  • Sharing previous images

If you have had X-rays at another office recently, let the team know so the images can be requested. That can avoid repeating images unnecessarily. Mention pregnancy or the possibility of pregnancy before any imaging, so the dentist can consider whether to postpone non-urgent X-rays or take additional precautions appropriate to the situation and your stage.

The process

Taking an X-ray is usually quick.

  1. What happens in the chair

A small sensor is placed in the mouth and held in position while the image is captured, often in a matter of seconds. For panoramic views, you stand or sit while the machine moves around your head. A protective covering may be used. The images appear on a screen, which allows the dentist to review them with you during the same appointment.

  2. Comfort and gag reflex

If you have a strong gag reflex or a small mouth, mention it before the images are taken. The team can adjust the sensor position, take breaks or suggest breathing techniques that make it easier. Children can be shown the equipment first so they know what to expect. Tell the team if anything feels uncomfortable at any point.

Understanding results

The images are a tool for a clearer conversation.

Reviewing the images together

The dentist can show you the images on screen and point out healthy areas alongside any concerns. Seeing a shadow between teeth or a change around a root can make an explanation easier to follow. Ask questions about anything that is unclear, including what a finding means for the tooth and how urgent it is likely to be.

What happens next

If a problem is found, the dentist will discuss treatment options or whether monitoring is appropriate. Images are stored in your record so later X-rays can be compared to see whether something is stable or changing. If you move to another office or need a specialist referral, copies can usually be shared with your permission.

When you book at our Port Dover office, mention any recent X-rays taken elsewhere and the name of that office. The team can explain whether new images are likely to be needed for your visit.

Let the team know about pregnancy, a strong gag reflex or any previous difficulty with dental X-rays before your appointment begins.

Dental X-ray questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often do I need dental X-rays?

It depends on your oral health, age, risk of decay and symptoms. The dentist recommends imaging based on what is needed to assess your teeth and gums properly, and will explain the reasoning if you ask.

Are dental X-rays safe?

Dental X-rays use a low dose of radiation, and precautions are taken to keep exposure as low as reasonably achievable. The dentist only recommends imaging when the information is expected to benefit your care. Ask any questions you have.

Can I have X-rays while pregnant?

Let the team know if you are or may be pregnant. Non-urgent imaging may be postponed, while urgent situations can be discussed. The dentist will explain the options and precautions so you can make an informed decision together.

Can you use X-rays from my old dentist?

Often, yes, if they are recent and of good quality. Ask your previous office to send them, or let our team know where they were taken. The dentist will review them and decide whether any new images are still needed.

Why do children need X-rays?

X-rays can show decay between baby teeth, check developing adult teeth and help assess spacing or injuries. The dentist recommends imaging for children based on their individual needs and risk rather than on a fixed schedule.
