Restore your smile and bite

Dentures can help you eat, speak and smile with more ease.

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. They range from complete dentures for a full arch to partial dentures that fill gaps between natural teeth, and some can be stabilised with implants. Modern dentures are designed to look natural, but adjusting to them takes patience, and a good fit is central to comfort, chewing and confidence in everyday life.

Whether you are considering your first denture or your current one is wearing out, patients from Windham Centre can visit our Port Dover office for an assessment. The dentist will explain the options available, what the process involves from start to finish and how to care for your new teeth.

First steps

A thorough exam guides the denture plan.

Assessing your mouth

The dentist examines your remaining teeth, gums and jawbone and may take X-rays. Teeth that cannot be saved may need extraction, and gum disease may require treatment before a denture is made. The dentist will explain why each step is recommended and how healing time could affect when your denture is ready, so the timeline feels predictable.

Exploring the choices

Complete, partial and implant-supported dentures each have their strengths. Immediate dentures are placed on the day teeth are removed, while conventional dentures are made after the gums have healed. The dentist will outline the advantages, costs and maintenance needs of each type. Ask as many questions as you need until you feel comfortable with the choice in front of you.

Making the denture

Several visits help achieve a comfortable fit.

  1. Impressions and bite records

Impressions of your mouth and records of how your jaws meet are used to design the denture. You will discuss tooth colour, shape and size, and the dentist will consider your facial features and speech so the result looks and works naturally. If a previous denture caused problems, mention them now so the new design can try to address those concerns.

  2. Try-in and final delivery

A try-in lets you see the teeth set in wax before the denture is finished, so you can check appearance and bite and request changes. At delivery, the dentist fits the denture, relieves any pressure points and explains how to insert, remove and clean it. Follow-up visits are usually needed in the first few weeks as your mouth settles.

Adjusting

Give yourself time to adapt.

Eating and speaking

Start with soft foods cut into small pieces, and chew slowly using both sides of your mouth to keep the denture stable. Avoid very sticky or hard foods at first. Speech may feel different, so practise by reading aloud. Saliva flow often increases for a while. Most people find that eating and speaking become noticeably easier over several weeks of regular wear.

Managing early discomfort

Sore spots are common early on as the gums get used to pressure. Do not try to file or adjust the denture yourself. Contact the office so the dentist can make careful adjustments. Rinsing with warm salt water may help if advised. Persistent pain, ulcers that do not heal or a denture that feels unstable should be checked promptly rather than tolerated.

Daily care

Good habits protect your denture and your mouth.

  • Cleaning dentures and gums

Brush your denture every day with a soft brush and a denture cleanser, and soak it as directed. Clean your gums, tongue and any remaining natural teeth as well. Remove the denture overnight unless you are advised otherwise, storing it in water or solution so it does not dry out. Handle it over a towel or basin to reduce the risk of breakage.

  • Regular reviews

Even with no natural teeth left, regular dental visits matter. The dentist checks the denture’s fit, examines your gums and screens for oral cancer and other changes. Over time, a reline or a new denture may be needed as your mouth changes shape. Bring your denture to each appointment so the team can inspect it and keep it working well.

Denture questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long do dentures last?

Many dentures last several years, but changes in your mouth and wear on the teeth mean they will eventually need relining or replacing. Regular checkups help the dentist advise on timing, rather than waiting until the fit becomes a problem.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

Most people return to a varied diet after an adjustment period of a few weeks. Very hard or sticky foods may remain challenging. Cutting food into smaller pieces and chewing on both sides at once helps keep the denture steady.

What are immediate dentures?

Immediate dentures are placed on the same day teeth are removed, so you are not without teeth while the gums heal. They usually need relining or adjustment as the gums settle and change shape over the following months.

Will dentures change how I speak?

Some people notice small changes in certain sounds at first. Practising speaking and reading aloud usually helps the tongue adapt. If difficulties continue beyond the first few weeks, the dentist can check the denture’s fit and design.

Do I still need dental checkups with dentures?

Yes. Checkups allow the dentist to assess fit, examine your gums and screen for oral cancer and other changes. Regular visits help keep your denture comfortable and your mouth healthy, even when no natural teeth remain.
