Caring for Wilsonville patients at our Port Dover office

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and surrounding gum tissue. They can restore the ability to chew and speak more comfortably and support the lips and cheeks. Getting used to them takes time, and the experience varies from person to person depending on the shape of the gums, the number of teeth replaced and personal expectations.
If you live in Wilsonville and are thinking about dentures, or struggling with a set you already have, you can book a visit at our Port Dover office. The dentist will listen to what you need from your teeth and explain realistic outcomes so you can make a comfortable choice.

Expectations
Dentures can replace several or all teeth, improve your ability to chew many foods and restore a fuller look to the face. For people with failing teeth, they may relieve ongoing pain or infection. Modern dentures can look natural, and your dentist can help choose tooth shapes and colours that suit you.
Dentures do not feel exactly like natural teeth. Chewing force is generally lower, and lower dentures in particular may move. Some foods may remain harder to eat. Adjustments, practice and patience are normal parts of the process. Implant support may improve stability in some cases.
Getting dentures
The process begins with an examination and impressions of your mouth. Bite records show how your jaws meet. You and the dentist discuss tooth shape, size and colour. If teeth need to be removed, the timing of extractions and denture delivery will be planned, including whether an immediate denture is suitable.
A wax try-in lets you see how the teeth will look and check the bite before the denture is finished. Share honest feedback at this stage. When the finished denture is delivered, the fit is checked and adjusted. Follow-up appointments address sore spots as you begin wearing it.
Adjusting
Start with soft foods cut into small pieces, chewing slowly on both sides at once to keep the denture stable. Gradually add firmer foods as you gain confidence. Avoid very sticky or hard foods at first. It is normal for chewing to feel awkward in the beginning.
Speech may sound slightly different initially. Reading aloud and repeating difficult words can help your tongue and cheeks adapt. Extra saliva and mild soreness are common early on. Call the office if a sore spot develops rather than putting up with it, since a small adjustment can make a big difference.
Daily care
Remove and rinse dentures after meals when possible. Brush them daily with a soft brush and denture cleaner. Clean your gums, tongue and any remaining teeth with a soft toothbrush. Many people are advised to leave dentures out overnight, stored in water or a cleaning solution.
Even if you have no natural teeth, regular dental visits are important. The dentist checks your gums and mouth for sores or other changes, examines the denture for wear and evaluates the fit. As your mouth changes, relines or a new denture may be needed eventually.
Planning your appointment
Book an appointment at our Port Dover office to talk about new dentures or problems with your current set. Ask how many visits the process involves so you can plan transportation.
Bring any existing dentures, a list of medications and notes about what you find hardest to eat or most uncomfortable.

Many people adapt over several weeks, though it varies. Speech and chewing usually improve with practice. Follow-up adjustments help address sore spots during this period.
Most foods can be eaten with care, but very hard, sticky or tough foods may remain challenging. Cutting food into small pieces and chewing on both sides helps.
Some people use small amounts of adhesive for extra security. Needing more over time may suggest the fit has changed. Ask the dentist whether an adjustment or reline would help.
Yes. Checkups allow the dentist to examine your gums and soft tissues, including screening for oral cancer, and to check the denture’s fit and condition.
An immediate denture is placed on the same day teeth are removed, so you are not without teeth during healing. It usually needs relining as the gums shrink.
Missing several or all teeth? Wilsonville patients can compare complete and partial dentures and learn about the fitting process at our Port Dover dental office.
