Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. They can help with chewing, speaking clearly and supporting the cheeks and lips so the face does not look sunken. Dentures are not identical to natural teeth, and most people need a period of practice before they feel confident. Knowing what to expect helps many wearers adapt more easily.
If you live in Walsingham and are losing teeth, or already wear a denture that is not working well, our Port Dover dentists can assess your mouth and talk through the options. That conversation may include full or partial dentures, immediate dentures after extractions and dentures supported by implants.

Your situation
If teeth still need to be removed, the dentist will discuss whether to wait for healing before making a denture or provide an immediate denture on the day of extraction. Immediate dentures mean you are not without teeth, but they usually need adjustments and a reline as the gums heal and shrink.
If you already wear a denture that feels loose, causes sore spots or looks worn, the dentist will check whether it can be relined or repaired, or whether a new one would serve you better. Bring your current denture to the visit, along with notes about what you like and dislike about it.
Types
A full denture replaces all the teeth in an arch, while a partial denture fills gaps among remaining natural teeth. Partials often use clasps or attachments for stability. The dentist will consider the health of your remaining teeth, your gums and your goals when recommending which type is suitable.
For some people, especially those with a loose lower denture, implants can be placed to help hold the denture in place. This can improve stability, though it involves surgery, healing time and additional cost. The dentist can discuss whether implant support is worth considering and what assessment would be needed.
Daily life
Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew slowly using both sides of your mouth. Gradually introduce firmer foods. Speech may feel different at first; reading aloud and repeating tricky words can help. The cheek and tongue muscles learn to help keep the denture in place, which takes time and patience.
Take dentures out daily to clean them with a soft brush and a denture cleaner, and rinse after meals when possible. Many people are advised to leave them out overnight. Clean your gums, tongue and any natural teeth too. Store dentures in water or a soaking solution so they do not dry out and warp.
Checkups
Even with no natural teeth, regular dental visits matter. The dentist checks your gums, tongue and other soft tissues for sores or changes, including signs that need further investigation. They also examine the denture for wear and fit. These visits are a chance to address small issues before they become painful.
A denture that has become loose, clicks when you talk, causes sore spots or makes chewing harder may need adjustment, a reline or replacement. Using more and more adhesive is often a sign the fit has changed. Contact the office when you notice these signs rather than waiting until the denture breaks.
Planning your appointment
Walsingham residents can call our Port Dover office to explain whether they need new dentures or help with existing ones. The team can describe the steps and the number of visits usually involved.
Bring your current denture if you have one, any recent X-rays and a list of medications. Note any sore spots or eating difficulties.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Modern dentures can look quite natural. Tooth shade, shape and arrangement are chosen to suit your face. Bringing old photos of your smile can help the dentist and laboratory create a familiar look.
Most people can eat a wide variety of foods once they adapt, though very hard or sticky foods may remain challenging. Starting with soft foods and practising helps build confidence.
A well-fitting denture should not need large amounts of adhesive. Some people use a small amount for extra confidence. If you need more and more over time, the fit may need checking.
Dentures wear and the mouth changes, so they often need relining and eventually replacing after a number of years. Regular checkups help the dentist advise when that is needed.
A poorly fitting or unclean denture can cause sore spots or irritation. Report sores that do not heal within a short time, so the dentist can adjust the denture and check the tissue.
