Removable tooth replacement

Dentures can restore a smile when several teeth are gone.

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the gum tissue that supported them. They can help with eating, speaking and the fullness of the face. Options range from partial dentures that work alongside remaining teeth to complete dentures and implant-retained versions that snap onto implants for added stability.

If you live in Walsh and are thinking about dentures, a consultation at our Port Dover office is a good place to start. The dentist will examine your mouth, discuss your expectations and explain which type of denture fits your health, budget and the way you live day to day.

Starting out

Begin with your situation and priorities.

Why dentures may be suggested

Dentures are often considered when many teeth are missing or failing because of decay, gum disease or injury. The dentist will look at which teeth can reasonably be kept and which cannot, and explain how that affects the choice between partial and complete dentures. X-rays help show the health of the roots and bone that will support whatever is chosen.

What you want from them

Think about what matters most to you, such as chewing firmer foods, appearance, cost or how secure the denture feels when you talk and laugh. Sharing these priorities openly helps the dentist suggest an option that suits your daily life, rather than a one-size-fits-all solution that looks fine on paper but frustrates you at the dinner table.

Types

Several designs are available.

Partial and complete dentures

Partial dentures replace some teeth and attach to natural teeth with clasps or other connectors. Complete dentures replace all the teeth in an arch and rest on the gums, held by suction and muscle control. The dentist will explain how each type is supported and how it would likely feel and function in your particular mouth.

Immediate and implant-supported dentures

Immediate dentures are placed on the day teeth are removed, so you are not without teeth during healing, but they need relining as the gums shrink and settle. Implant-supported dentures attach to implants for much greater stability and may be considered if a loose lower denture is a concern. Each choice has different costs and timelines.

Making them

Dentures are built over several appointments.

  1. Records and try-in

Impressions, bite records and choices about tooth shade and shape come first. A try-in lets you see and feel the teeth set in wax before the denture is finalized. Speak up if something looks or feels wrong at this stage, such as tooth length or the way your lips sit, as changes are much easier before completion.

  2. Delivery and adjustments

At delivery, the dentist checks fit and bite and explains how to insert, remove and clean the denture properly. Follow-up visits are common in the first weeks to relieve sore spots. If the trip from Walsh needs planning, ask how adjustment appointments are usually scheduled, so you are not left putting up with discomfort between visits.

Daily life

Adapting takes patience and practice.

Eating and speaking

Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew on both sides at once to keep the denture steady. Speech can feel strange at first; reading aloud helps your tongue and lips adapt more quickly. Over time most people become comfortable, though dentures never feel exactly like natural teeth. Adhesive may help some people but should not replace a good fit.

Cleaning and checkups

Clean dentures daily with a denture brush and an appropriate cleanser, and remove them for a period as recommended to rest your gums. Keep regular checkups even if you have no natural teeth left, so the dentist can check fit, examine your mouth for sores and screen for other changes such as unusual patches or lumps.

Denture questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does it take to get used to dentures?

Many people take a few weeks to adjust to eating and speaking, and some take longer. Follow-up adjustments help a great deal. Patience and regular practice with different foods usually lead to steady improvement over the first months.

Will people be able to tell I wear dentures?

Well-made dentures are designed to look natural. Tooth shade, shape and arrangement are chosen to suit your face and age. A try-in lets you check appearance and request changes before the denture is completed and delivered.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

Most foods can be managed with practice, though very hard or sticky foods may remain challenging. Implant-supported dentures often improve chewing noticeably. Start with soft foods and progress gradually as your confidence grows week by week.

Do I still need dental checkups with dentures?

Yes. Checkups monitor fit, look for sores and include oral cancer screening of the soft tissues. Partial denture wearers also need care for their remaining natural teeth, which support the denture and need to stay healthy.

What are implant-supported dentures?

They are dentures that attach to dental implants, offering more stability than gums alone can provide. Suitability depends on bone and overall health. The dentist can explain whether they are a realistic option for you and what is involved.
