Comfortable function again

Good dentures are made around your mouth, your face and your routine.

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the surrounding gum tissue. They can restore the ability to chew a wider range of foods, support the lips and cheeks and help with clear speech. Getting a comfortable result takes careful measurement, honest feedback during fittings and a little patience while your mouth and muscles adapt to the new appliance.

Whether you have recently lost teeth or have worn dentures for many years, patients from Vittoria can discuss options at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain the types available, whether any remaining teeth should be kept, and what to expect over the fitting appointments and the first weeks of wear.

Starting out

The first visit is about your mouth and what you need from a denture.

Understanding your situation

The dentist will examine any remaining teeth, the gums and the underlying bone, and may take X-rays. If you already wear a denture, bring it so its fit and condition can be assessed. You will be asked what you find difficult, whether that is eating, speaking, comfort or appearance, so the new denture can be planned to address those concerns directly.

Setting expectations

Dentures can work very well, but they are different from natural teeth. Lower dentures in particular can be less stable. The dentist will talk honestly about what to expect for chewing and speaking, and whether options such as implant support might improve stability in your case. Clear expectations help make the adjustment period smoother and less frustrating.

Options

There is more than one way to replace missing teeth with a denture.

Full, partial and immediate

Complete dentures replace all teeth in an arch. Partial dentures fill gaps between remaining natural teeth and clip onto them. Immediate dentures are placed on the day teeth are removed, so you are not without teeth during healing, though they usually need adjustments or a reline as the gums settle. The dentist will explain which type fits your circumstances.

Implant-supported dentures

Dentures can sometimes be anchored to dental implants for added stability, which may help especially with lower dentures. This involves surgery and additional cost and time. If you are interested, the dentist can explain whether you might be suitable and how implant-supported options compare with conventional dentures in day-to-day use and long-term maintenance. There is no pressure to decide quickly.

Fitting visits

Several appointments help get the details right.

  1. Impressions and bite records

Impressions capture the shape of your gums and any remaining teeth. Bite records show how your jaws relate to each other. You will choose tooth shade and shape with the dentist, often considering photos or your natural appearance. These steps take time but help ensure the denture looks natural and fits well from the start.

  2. Try-in and final fit

A wax try-in lets you see and feel the denture before it is finished, and adjustments to tooth position or appearance can be made. At delivery, the dentist checks fit, comfort and bite and shows you how to insert, remove and clean the denture. Follow-up visits are usually needed to fine-tune comfort over the first few weeks.

Everyday care

Daily care protects both the denture and your mouth.

  • Cleaning and storage

Remove the denture daily to clean it with a soft brush and a cleaner recommended by the team. Clean over a towel or basin of water to avoid breakage if it falls. Many people are advised to remove dentures overnight to rest the gums. Store them as directed, and keep remaining natural teeth and your gums clean as well.

  • Ongoing checkups

Gums and bone change over time, so a denture that fits well today may loosen later. Regular checkups allow the dentist to assess fit, check for sore spots and examine soft tissues for unusual changes. Relines or adjustments can extend the life of a denture. Contact the office if a sore spot lasts more than a couple of weeks.

Questions about dentures

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does it take to get used to dentures?

Many people need several weeks to adjust to eating and speaking with new dentures. Starting with soft foods and practising speaking aloud can help. Follow-up visits are part of the process, so let the team know about sore spots or difficulties early.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

Most people can eat a wide variety of foods once they adjust, though very hard or sticky foods can be challenging. Cutting food into smaller pieces and chewing on both sides helps. The dentist can offer advice specific to your denture and mouth.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures often last several years, but they wear and the mouth changes. Relines and repairs can extend their life. The dentist will let you know when a reline or replacement is advisable based on fit, wear and your comfort.

Do I still need dental checkups with full dentures?

Yes. Checkups allow the dentist to examine your gums, tongue and other soft tissues, check the denture’s fit and look for sore spots. Oral cancer screening and soft tissue health remain important even without natural teeth.

What are immediate dentures?

Immediate dentures are made ahead of time and placed on the same day teeth are removed. They allow you to have teeth during healing but usually need adjustments or a reline as the gums shrink. The dentist can explain whether they suit your plan.
