Bringing back function and confidence

Dentures can work well when expectations and follow-up are realistic.

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth, either replacing a full arch or filling gaps between remaining teeth. Modern dentures can look natural and help with chewing and speech, but they are not identical to natural teeth. Knowing what to expect, from the first fitting to long-term care, makes the transition smoother for most people.

If you are in Vanessa and thinking about dentures, or struggling with an old set, the team at our Port Dover office can assess your mouth and explain your options. Dentures usually involve several appointments and some adjustments, so it helps to plan around your schedule and transportation from the outset.

Is it time

The right time depends on your teeth and your goals.

Signs dentures may help

Dentures may be recommended when many teeth are missing, or when remaining teeth are too damaged or loose to save. Difficulty chewing, avoiding certain foods, discomfort, or embarrassment about gaps are common reasons people ask. The dentist will examine your teeth, gums and bone to explain whether dentures, partial dentures or other options make sense.

Exploring other options

If some teeth are healthy, a partial denture may preserve them. Implant-supported dentures can offer more stability, especially for lower dentures, though they involve surgery and higher cost. Bridges can replace small gaps. The dentist will explain each choice in plain terms, so you can decide what suits your health, budget and lifestyle over the long run.

Getting dentures

Making dentures takes several careful steps.

  1. Extractions and healing

If teeth need to be removed, the dentist will discuss whether you will wear an immediate denture while healing, or wait for the gums to settle first. Immediate dentures avoid going without teeth but usually need more adjustments and relines as the gums shrink. Ask which approach suits your situation and what the timeline looks like.

  2. Impressions, try-in and fitting

Impressions and bite records are taken so the denture can be designed to your mouth. A try-in lets you see the tooth arrangement and give feedback before it is finished. At delivery, the dentist checks fit and bite and shows you how to put the denture in, remove it and clean it properly at home.

Adapting

Patience and follow-up visits help you adjust.

  • Eating and speaking

Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew slowly using both sides of your mouth. Speech may feel strange at first; reading aloud and repeating tricky words can help. Many people feel more comfortable after a few weeks, though lower dentures can take longer because the tongue and cheeks move them around more.

  • Managing sore spots

Sore spots are common early on and usually mean the denture needs a small adjustment. Call the office rather than trying to fix it yourself. Remove the denture overnight unless advised otherwise, and rinse your mouth with warm salt water if the gums feel tender. Return for follow-up visits as recommended, even if things feel fine.

Long-term care

Ongoing care keeps your dentures and gums healthy.

Cleaning and storage

Brush your dentures daily with a soft brush and denture cleaner, not regular toothpaste. Clean over a towel or basin of water to prevent breakage. Store them in water or soaking solution overnight. Brush your gums, tongue and any remaining teeth gently every day to keep your mouth healthy and comfortable. A clean denture also stays fresher and less stained.

Checkups, relines and replacement

Your gums and bone change over time, so dentures gradually loosen. Regular checkups allow the dentist to examine your mouth for sore spots or other changes and check the denture fit. Relines can improve fit, and eventually dentures need replacement. Call the office if your denture cracks, loosens or causes pain between your regular visits.

Denture questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will dentures look natural?

Modern dentures can look very natural when the tooth shape, shade and arrangement are chosen carefully to suit your face. The try-in appointment lets you see the design and request changes before the denture is finished.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

Most people can return to a varied diet, but it takes practice. Start with soft foods, cut food into small pieces and chew evenly on both sides. Very hard, sticky or tough foods may always need extra care.

What is an immediate denture?

An immediate denture is placed on the same day teeth are removed, so you are not without teeth while healing. Because the gums shrink as they heal, immediate dentures usually need adjustments and relines in the months afterward.

Should I wear my dentures at night?

Most dentists recommend removing them at night to let your gums rest and reduce the risk of irritation or infection. Keep them in water or solution overnight. Follow the specific advice your dentist gives you.

How often should dentures be checked?

Even without natural teeth, regular dental visits are important. The dentist checks the fit of your dentures and examines your gums and mouth tissues for sore spots or other changes. They will recommend an appropriate schedule.
