Removable tooth replacement

Well-made dentures still take some getting used to.

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth, designed to restore chewing, support the lips and cheeks and improve appearance. They come in complete and partial forms and can be made in conventional styles or designed to clip onto implants. Even a well-fitting denture feels different from natural teeth at first, so patience and follow-up matter.

People in Townsend thinking about dentures can start with an exam at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look at your remaining teeth, gums and bone, ask about your daily needs and expectations, and explain the options and the series of appointments involved in making and fitting a denture.

Exploring options

Your remaining teeth shape the recommendation.

Conventional complete and partial dentures

Complete dentures replace all teeth in an arch and rest on the gums. Partial dentures fill gaps between remaining teeth and are held with clasps or attachments. The dentist will explain how each type stays in place, how it affects the teeth you still have and what level of chewing ability to realistically expect.

Implant-retained alternatives

For people who struggle with a loose denture, particularly on the lower jaw where suction is weaker, implants can provide additional retention. They involve minor surgery and a longer treatment timeline, but can make a real difference to stability when eating and talking. The dentist can discuss whether you are a candidate and how implant options compare with conventional dentures.

Making the denture

Several visits help achieve a comfortable fit.

  1. Impressions and bite measurements

The process begins with impressions of your mouth and records of how your jaws relate to each other. If extractions are needed, the dentist will explain whether an immediate denture can be fitted on the same day or whether the gums need to heal first. Each approach has benefits and trade-offs worth discussing.

  2. Try-in and final fitting

A try-in appointment lets you see the tooth shape, colour and bite before the denture is finished. Give honest feedback at this stage. At the final fitting, the dentist checks comfort and bite and explains how to insert, remove and clean the denture. Follow-up adjustments are a normal part of the process.

Adjusting to dentures

Expect a learning curve in the first weeks.

Eating and speaking with new dentures

Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew slowly using both sides of the mouth. Avoid very sticky or hard foods initially. Speaking may feel awkward, and some words may sound different; reading aloud can help. Most people find these challenges ease as the muscles of the cheeks and tongue adapt.

Managing sore spots

Sore spots are common as the denture settles. Do not try to adjust or file the denture yourself. Contact the office so the dentist can relieve the pressure point. If you cannot wear the denture because of pain, leave it out briefly and arrange an appointment soon, wearing it beforehand so the sore spot is visible.

Daily care

Good care protects both the denture and your mouth.

  • Cleaning and storage routines

Remove and rinse your denture after meals. Brush it daily with a soft brush and a denture cleaner, and clean your gums, tongue and any remaining teeth. Most people are advised to remove dentures overnight and store them in water or a soaking solution to keep them from drying out and warping.

  • Regular checkups and fit reviews

Your gums and the bone beneath them slowly change shape over the years, so a denture that fits well now may loosen in the future. Regular checkups allow the dentist to check the fit, look for sores or signs of infection and examine the soft tissues of your mouth. A reline or a replacement denture may be recommended as your mouth gradually changes.

Questions about dentures

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does it take to get used to dentures?

Many people adapt over several weeks, though it varies from person to person. Eating, speaking and comfort typically improve with practice and a few follow-up adjustments. Contact the office if discomfort persists or the denture still feels unstable.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

Most foods become manageable with practice, but very hard or sticky foods may remain challenging. Chewing evenly on both sides helps keep the denture stable. The dentist can give tips specific to your denture.

Should I take my dentures out at night?

Most people are advised to remove dentures overnight to rest the gums, lower the risk of fungal infection and allow thorough cleaning. The dentist may advise otherwise in specific situations, such as the first night after extractions.

Why does my denture feel loose?

Gums and bone gradually change shape after teeth are lost, which can loosen a denture. A reline or adjustment may help. If the denture is very old, replacement may be recommended after assessment.

Can dentures be attached to implants?

Yes. Implant-retained dentures clip onto implants placed in the jaw for added stability. They involve minor surgery, healing time and careful planning. The dentist can explain whether you are a candidate and how they compare with conventional dentures.
