Caring for St. Williams patients at our office in Port Dover
Every dental service for St. WilliamsReplacing missing teeth
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the surrounding tissue. They can help you eat a wider range of foods, speak clearly and support the shape of your face. Getting used to them takes patience, and they work best when planned around the condition of your gums, any remaining teeth and what matters most to you day to day.
Whether you are considering dentures for the first time or your current set no longer feels right, St. Williams patients can visit our Port Dover office for an assessment and a straightforward discussion of the options available.

Is it time?
Several missing teeth, difficulty chewing, teeth that are loose from advanced gum disease or a mouth that needs extensive repair can all lead to a denture discussion. For some people, keeping a few healthy teeth to support a partial denture is preferable to replacing all of them. The dentist will explain your situation.
Ask whether other approaches, such as bridges or implant-supported options, could suit you. Ask what the process involves, how long it takes and what adjustment typically looks like. Understanding the commitment before starting helps you make a decision you are comfortable with.
Types
Complete dentures replace all teeth in an arch and rest on the gums. Partial dentures fill gaps when some natural teeth remain, using clasps or attachments for support. The dentist will consider gum health, bone shape and your bite when recommending the type that is likely to be most stable.
Immediate dentures are placed on the day teeth are removed, so you are not without teeth while healing, though they usually need relining as the gums shrink. Implant-supported dentures attach to implants for added stability. Each type has different requirements, costs and maintenance.
Getting dentures
Impressions, bite records and tooth selection are completed over one or more visits. A wax try-in lets you see the appearance and check the bite before the denture is finished. Speak up about anything you would like to change, as adjustments are easier before the final denture is processed.
When the denture is delivered, the dentist checks fit and comfort and shows you how to insert, remove and clean it. Follow-up appointments are common for adjusting sore spots. It may take weeks to feel comfortable eating and speaking, so give yourself time and keep in touch with the team.
Daily life
Start with soft foods cut into small pieces, chewing slowly on both sides at once. Gradually reintroduce firmer foods. Reading aloud can help your tongue and lips adjust to the new shape. Some words may sound different at first, but speech usually improves with practice.
Brush your denture daily with a soft brush and denture cleaner, and rinse after meals. Remove it at night unless instructed otherwise, and keep it in water or solution. Clean your gums and tongue with a soft brush. Regular checkups help catch fit problems and monitor oral tissues.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment. Mention whether you currently wear a denture, how many natural teeth you have and any discomfort or difficulty eating.
Ask how many visits to expect so you can plan travel, and bring your current denture if you have one.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Modern dentures can look quite natural. Tooth shade, shape and arrangement are chosen with your input. The try-in appointment gives you a chance to review the appearance before the denture is completed.
Most people can eat a varied diet after an adjustment period, though very hard or sticky foods may remain challenging. Start with softer foods and progress gradually as you build confidence.
A well-fitting denture often does not need adhesive, though some people find a small amount adds confidence. Needing more adhesive over time may mean the denture needs a reline.
Dentures often last several years, but gums change and teeth wear down. Relines or replacement are typically needed eventually. Regular checkups help the dentist judge when that time comes.
Generally, it is recommended to remove them at night so gums can rest and to reduce the risk of irritation and infection. The dentist may advise differently right after extractions.
Missing several teeth or all of them? St. Williams residents can compare complete and partial dentures and plan the fitting appointments at our Port Dover office.
A cracked denture, a lost tooth or a fit that has loosened over time can often be addressed. St. Williams denture wearers can call our Port Dover team for help.
