Removable teeth, realistic expectations

Dentures work best when expectations are clear from the start.

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. They range from a small partial that fills one gap to full sets replacing every tooth in both jaws. Modern dentures can look natural and help with eating and speaking, but they are not the same as natural teeth, and most wearers go through a learning curve.

Whether you are facing the loss of remaining teeth or wondering if an older denture can be improved, our Port Dover office is where Renton residents can sit down with the dentist, look at options and plan each step. The team will be upfront about adjustment periods and maintenance.

Starting the conversation

A first appointment clarifies whether dentures fit your situation.

Why dentures may be recommended

Dentures may be suggested when many teeth are missing or cannot be saved due to decay or gum disease. The dentist examines remaining teeth, gums and jaw ridges, often with X-rays. If some healthy teeth remain, a partial denture may preserve them. If none can be kept, a complete denture may be discussed in detail.

What matters to you

Share what you hope to achieve, such as eating more comfortably, smiling with confidence or replacing an old set that no longer fits. Mention any concerns about appearance, speech or managing a removable appliance. Your priorities help the dentist explain which approach suits you and what to expect. Bring any old denture to show what has or has not worked.

Types of dentures

Several denture styles serve different needs.

Complete and partial

Complete dentures replace a full arch and rest on the gums. Partial dentures fill gaps and are held by clasps or attachments on natural teeth. The dentist will explain how each type feels, how stable it is likely to be and how it should be cleaned and maintained. Supporting natural teeth need extra care with partials.

Immediate and implant-supported

An immediate denture is placed on the same day teeth are removed, so you are not without teeth while healing; it usually needs adjustments or a reline later. Implant-supported dentures attach to implants for added stability. Ask whether these options may suit your health and goals. Each involves different timing and upkeep over the years.

Getting used to them

Patience and practice help in the early weeks.

  1. Eating and speaking

Begin with soft foods cut into small pieces, chewing slowly on both sides. Avoid very sticky or hard foods at first. Speech may sound different; reading aloud and repeating troublesome words can help. Most people find eating and speaking improve as the mouth adapts over time. Some take longer than others, and that is normal.

  2. Sore spots and adjustments

Sore spots are common early on. Note where they occur and contact the office for an adjustment. Avoid trimming or bending the denture yourself. Follow-up visits are a normal part of the process, and Renton patients can plan these ahead to reduce unexpected trips. Write down sore spots between visits so adjustments are targeted and quick.

Daily care

Good care protects both the denture and your gums.

  • Cleaning the denture

Rinse dentures after eating and brush them daily with a soft brush and denture cleaner. Regular toothpaste can be too abrasive. Handle them over a towel or basin of water in case they slip. Soak them overnight in water or solution unless the dentist advises otherwise. Never use hot water, which can warp them permanently.

  • Caring for your mouth

Brush any remaining natural teeth, your gums and tongue to remove plaque and stimulate circulation. Remove dentures overnight to rest the gums unless told otherwise. Attend regular checkups so the dentist can check fit, look for sore spots and examine soft tissues for changes. These visits matter even with a full set of dentures in place.

Denture questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long will it take to get dentures?

It depends on the type and whether extractions or other treatment are needed first. Several appointments are usually involved. The dentist can give you an estimated timeline after the initial exam and any X-rays are reviewed.

Will dentures change how I speak?

Speech may feel different at first. Most people adapt with practice. If difficulties persist, the dentist can check fit and suggest adjustments. Reading aloud and practising tricky words at home often speeds things up noticeably.

Do I need adhesive?

Well-fitting dentures often need little or no adhesive. Some people use a small amount for added confidence. If you need more adhesive over time, the fit may need checking. A reline may help restore a snug fit.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures wear and gums change over time, so relines or replacements are eventually needed. Regular checkups help the dentist recommend when an update is appropriate. Worn teeth on the denture can also affect chewing over time.

Can I eat everything with dentures?

Many foods are manageable once you adjust, but very hard, sticky or tough foods may remain challenging. Cutting food into smaller pieces and chewing slowly helps. Chewing on both sides at once improves stability noticeably.
