Losing several or all teeth affects eating, speaking and how you feel about your appearance. Dentures can restore much of that function, though they are different from natural teeth. Comfort comes from a careful fit, patience while learning to use them and regular adjustments as your mouth changes over the years.
Our Port Dover office helps patients from Port Ryerse decide which denture approach suits them. Whether you need your first denture or want to replace an old one, the dentist will look at your gums, any remaining teeth and your priorities before recommending a design.

Types of dentures
Full dentures replace all the teeth in an arch and rest on the gums. Partial dentures fill gaps when some natural teeth remain, using clasps or attachments for support. Immediate dentures are placed on the day of extractions, so you are not without teeth, though they usually need relining as the gums heal.
Implant-retained dentures snap onto implants placed in the jaw, providing much greater stability, particularly for lower dentures. This option involves surgery, healing time and higher cost. It is worth discussing if loose dentures have been a persistent problem. The dentist will evaluate whether it is feasible for you.
Getting started
The dentist examines your gums, bone ridges, remaining teeth and bite. X-rays may be taken. Teeth that are unlikely to last may be discussed, along with timing of extractions. Any infections or sore spots are treated first so the denture fits on healthy tissues.
You will help choose the shade, size and shape of the denture teeth. Bringing old photos may help recreate a familiar smile. Try-in appointments let you see and feel the arrangement before the denture is completed. Speak up about anything you would like to change at this stage.
Adjusting
Begin with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew on both sides at once to keep the denture stable. Gradually reintroduce firmer foods. Speech may feel different at first; reading aloud helps your tongue and cheeks adapt. Most people improve noticeably over a few weeks.
Sore spots are common early on. Do not try to adjust the denture yourself. Book a follow-up so the dentist can relieve pressure points. If a sore area appears, wearing the denture for a few hours before the visit can help the dentist see exactly where it rubs.
Daily care
Remove and rinse dentures after eating. Brush them daily with a soft brush and denture cleaner, not regular toothpaste. Soak them overnight unless advised otherwise. Handle them over a towel or water to prevent breakage, and store them away from children and pets.
Brush your gums, tongue and any natural teeth daily to remove plaque and stimulate the tissues. Removing dentures overnight gives the gums a rest. Regular checkups allow the dentist to check fit and look for sores or other changes in the mouth, even if you have no natural teeth.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and mention whether you are looking for a first denture, a replacement or improved stability. Bring your current denture to the assessment if you have one.
Old photos of your natural smile can be useful when choosing tooth shape and shade for a new denture.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Modern dentures can look very natural when teeth are chosen and arranged to suit your face. Try-in visits allow you to see and adjust the appearance before the denture is finished.
Most foods can be managed with practice, though very hard, sticky or tough items may remain challenging. Cutting food into small pieces and chewing on both sides helps keep the denture stable.
Dentures wear over time and the mouth changes shape, so relines and eventually replacement are usually needed. Regular checkups help determine the right timing for your situation.
A well-fitting denture may not need adhesive, but some people use a small amount for added security. If you need increasing amounts, the denture may need relining or adjustment.
Yes. Checkups allow the dentist to check fit, look for sores and examine the soft tissues for changes, including signs that could need further investigation.
Choosing between a full or partial denture depends on the teeth you still have. Port Ryerse patients can plan fit, function and care at our Port Dover office.
A cracked denture or one that has loosened over time can often be fixed. Port Ryerse denture wearers can arrange repairs and relines at our Port Dover office.
