Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the surrounding gum tissue. They can restore the ability to chew, support facial muscles and improve the appearance of a smile. Whether you need your first denture or a replacement, success depends on a careful fit, realistic expectations and patience while your mouth adapts to the new appliance.
Residents of Peacock Point and seasonal cottagers can begin denture care at our Port Dover office. Because fittings and follow-up adjustments are spread over several visits, let the team know your plans for the coming months so the schedule can be set accordingly.

First steps
The dentist examines your gums, any remaining teeth and the supporting bone, often with X-rays. Teeth with decay or disease may need treatment or removal. If you already wear a denture, bring it so the dentist can assess what is working and what is not. This helps shape the plan for a new or replacement appliance.
Complete dentures replace all the teeth in an arch, while partials fill gaps between natural teeth. Implant-supported options may offer more stability for some people. Ask the dentist to explain the advantages and trade-offs of each, including comfort, chewing ability, maintenance and how each might change over time.
Making dentures
Impressions or scans capture the shape of your mouth. Bite records establish how your jaws relate and how tall the denture should be. You may choose tooth colour and shape. Each step contributes to a denture that feels balanced and looks natural, so taking time with these appointments is worthwhile.
A try-in lets you see and feel the denture before it is finished. Speak up about appearance, speech or comfort, since changes are easiest at this point. At the final fitting, the dentist checks for pressure spots, adjusts the bite and teaches you how to insert, remove and clean the denture properly.
Adjusting
Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew slowly on both sides. Speaking may feel awkward at first, and reading aloud can help you practise. Extra saliva is common initially and usually settles. Most people find that eating and talking become more natural over several weeks of regular wear.
Sore spots are common in the early weeks. Do not try to adjust the denture yourself. Contact the office for an adjustment, which often provides quick relief. Rinsing with warm salt water may soothe irritated gums. If a sore does not heal within a reasonable time, have it examined to rule out other causes.
Long-term care
Remove and clean your denture daily with a soft brush and a cleaner designed for dentures. Brush your gums, tongue and any natural teeth too. Store the denture in water or a soaking solution when it is out of your mouth. Avoid hot water, bleach and abrasive toothpaste, which can damage the material.
Even with no natural teeth, regular checkups are important. The dentist checks the fit, looks for sore spots and examines the soft tissues for unusual changes. Gums and bone shrink over time, so relines or replacement may be needed. Contact the office if the denture becomes loose, cracks or causes discomfort.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to book a denture consultation. Let the team know whether you currently wear a denture and if your time at Peacock Point is seasonal or year-round.
Bring your existing denture if you have one, a list of medications and any recent dental records or X-rays.

Many people need several weeks to become comfortable eating and speaking with new dentures. Sore spots and minor adjustments are common in the early period. Follow-up visits help fine-tune the fit as your mouth settles.
Most foods can be eaten with practice, though very hard, sticky or tough foods may remain challenging. Cutting food into small pieces and chewing on both sides helps. Some people find certain foods easier than others.
A well-fitting denture should not need a lot of adhesive. Some people use a small amount for added confidence. If you find yourself needing more over time, the fit may need to be checked or the denture relined.
Dentures wear and the mouth changes over time, so many people need relines or replacement after several years. Regular checkups help the dentist determine when your denture no longer fits or functions well.
Yes. Checkups allow the dentist to assess fit, look for sore spots and screen the gums, tongue and other tissues for any unusual changes. Regular visits help keep your mouth healthy and comfortable.
