Dentures replace missing teeth with a removable appliance. They can improve chewing, speech and appearance when several or all teeth have been lost. Adjusting to dentures takes time, and expectations matter. Some people adapt quickly, while others need more practice and follow-up visits to get comfortable.
If you are a Normandale resident considering your first denture or replacing an older one, our Port Dover team can walk you through the process. We will explain the types of denture, what the fitting stages involve and how to care for your mouth and appliance afterwards.

Starting out
Dentures may be recommended when teeth cannot be saved because of decay, gum disease or injury, or when several teeth are already missing. Ask the dentist to explain the condition of your remaining teeth and gums, and whether any could be kept to support a partial denture rather than a complete one.
Bridges, implants and implant-supported dentures are other ways to replace teeth. Each has different requirements, costs and maintenance. The dentist can help you compare them, considering your health, budget and how you feel about removable versus fixed options.
Getting fitted
The dentist takes impressions of your mouth and records how your jaws relate when you close. Tooth shade, shape and size are chosen together. If teeth need extraction first, the timing of the denture will be discussed, including whether an immediate denture is suitable while healing.
A try-in lets you see and feel the setup before the denture is finalized. You can comment on appearance and the dentist can check speech and bite. Once delivered, follow-up appointments are often needed to relieve sore spots and fine-tune the fit as your mouth adapts.
Adapting
Start with soft foods cut into small pieces, chewing slowly on both sides at once to keep the denture stable. Reading aloud and repeating difficult words can help your tongue and lips learn new positions. Most people find eating and speaking become easier with regular practice.
Sore spots are common at first. Contact the office for an adjustment rather than enduring discomfort or altering the denture yourself. Extra saliva or a feeling of fullness usually settles. If problems persist, the dentist can review the fit and suggest further changes.
Long-term care
Brush the denture daily with a soft brush and denture cleaner, and rinse after meals when possible. Clean your gums, tongue and any remaining teeth too. Remove the denture overnight unless advised otherwise, storing it in water or solution to keep it from drying out and warping.
Gums and bone change shape over time, so a denture that once fit well may loosen. Regular checkups allow the dentist to examine your mouth for sore spots and other changes and to recommend a reline or replacement when needed. Bring your denture to every visit.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment. Tell us whether you currently wear a denture, which teeth are missing and any difficulty you are having with eating or comfort.
Bring your current denture if you have one, plus a medication list and any recent dental records.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
It varies. Many people adapt within a few weeks, while others take longer. Follow-up visits and practice with eating and speaking help the process.
Immediate dentures are sometimes possible and can be placed right after extractions. They usually need relining as the gums heal. The dentist will discuss whether this approach suits you.
Well-designed dentures can support the lips and cheeks and restore a natural appearance. You can review the look at the try-in stage before the denture is finished.
Yes. Checkups allow the dentist to examine your gums and soft tissues, check denture fit and look for changes that might need attention.
Dentures wear and the mouth changes over time, so many need relining or replacement after several years. Regular checkups help determine when that time comes.
