Removable teeth, realistic expectations

Good dentures start with an honest conversation about your needs.

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. They can be complete, replacing every tooth in an arch, or partial, filling gaps among natural teeth. Well-made dentures can help with chewing, speech and appearance, but they feel different from natural teeth and need an adjustment period, regular care and periodic refitting over the years.

Whether you are getting dentures for the first time or replacing an old set, our Port Dover office welcomes patients from Nixon. The dentist will look at your mouth, ask what matters most to you and explain options in plain terms, including how many visits are usually needed.

First conversation

Start with what matters most to you.

What you want from dentures

Some people mainly want to chew comfortably again, while others care most about appearance or speaking clearly. Some want a fixed option if possible, and others prefer removable teeth. Think about your priorities before the visit. If you wear dentures now, note what you like and dislike about them so the new set can be planned around real experience.

Your current situation

The dentist will examine your gums, remaining teeth and jaw, and may take X-rays. If teeth need to be removed, timing will be discussed, including whether an immediate denture can be worn while healing. Your health history and medications are also reviewed, since conditions like dry mouth can affect how comfortably a denture sits and stays in place.

Comparing options

There is more than one kind of denture.

Conventional and immediate dentures

Conventional dentures are made after the gums have healed from any extractions, which allows a more stable fit. Immediate dentures are placed on the day teeth are removed, so you are not without teeth, but they usually need more adjustments and a reline as the gums shrink. The dentist will explain the trade-offs for your situation and timeline.

Implant-supported options

For some people, implants can help hold a denture in place, reducing movement and improving chewing. This involves surgery and additional cost, and not everyone is a suitable candidate. Ask whether implant support is worth considering for you, especially if a lower denture has been difficult to keep steady in the past, and what that would involve.

Adjusting

Patience is part of the process.

Eating and speaking

New dentures often feel bulky, and your mouth may produce more saliva at first. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces, chewing slowly on both sides. Practise speaking by reading aloud, especially words that feel awkward. Over time, the muscles of your cheeks and tongue learn to help hold the denture, and confidence usually grows week by week.

Managing sore spots

Sore spots are common in the early weeks. Rather than trying to fix them yourself, call the office for an adjustment. Wearing the denture for a few hours before the visit helps the dentist find pressure areas. Several follow-up appointments may be needed, so plan for them when arranging your trips from Nixon into Port Dover.

Ongoing care

Dentures and gums both need attention.

  • Cleaning and storage

Brush your dentures daily with a soft brush and a cleaner made for them, not regular toothpaste, which can be abrasive. Rinse after meals when you can. Many people are advised to remove dentures overnight to let the gums rest. Store them in water or solution so they do not dry out, and keep them away from pets and small children.

  • Checkups and refitting

Even without natural teeth, regular dental visits matter. The dentist checks the fit, examines your gums and soft tissues and looks for sores or changes that need attention. Over the years, jaw changes may loosen dentures, and relining or replacement may be suggested. Report persistent sores, clicking or looseness rather than waiting for the next routine visit.

Denture questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long do dentures usually last?

Dentures can last several years, but the mouth changes over time and wear affects fit and appearance. Regular checkups help the dentist decide when a reline, repair or replacement is needed to keep your dentures comfortable and effective.

Will dentures change how I speak?

Some people notice changes at first, particularly with certain sounds. Reading aloud and practising conversation help. Most people adapt within weeks. If speech problems continue, the dentist can check whether the denture needs adjustment or a change in shape.

Can I eat everything with dentures?

Many foods become manageable with practice, but very hard, sticky or tough foods may remain difficult. Cut food into small pieces and chew on both sides. The dentist can offer tips during the adjustment period.

Should I take my dentures out at night?

Many people are advised to remove dentures overnight to rest the gums and reduce the risk of irritation. The dentist will give specific guidance and explain how to store your dentures safely while you sleep.

Is it normal for dentures to feel loose over time?

Yes, the gums and bone beneath dentures gradually change shape. A loose denture may need a reline or replacement. Contact the office rather than relying on increasing amounts of adhesive to hold it in place.
