Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. They can restore chewing, support the lips and cheeks and improve confidence in conversation. People come to dentures for many reasons, including tooth loss from decay, gum disease or injury. The first set, a replacement for a worn denture or an upgrade with implant support each involves different planning and expectations.
If you are weighing dentures, Long Point patients can arrange a conversation and examination at our Port Dover office. The team will explain options in plain terms and how many visits are usually involved.

Starting the conversation
Some people have several missing teeth and difficulty chewing. Others have remaining teeth that are failing and want a predictable solution. Some already wear a denture that no longer fits. Whatever brings you in, the dentist will look at your mouth and listen to what matters most to you.
Ask whether any teeth can be saved, what kinds of dentures are suitable and how implants might change stability. Ask how long the process takes and what the adjustment period is like. Clear answers help you approach the decision with realistic expectations.
Types of dentures
Complete dentures replace all teeth in an arch. Partial dentures fill gaps while keeping healthy natural teeth, attaching with clasps or other connectors. The dentist will explain which type suits your remaining teeth and gums, and how each affects chewing and appearance.
Immediate dentures are placed on the day teeth are removed, so you are not without teeth during healing, though they usually need relining later. Implant-supported dentures attach to implants for added stability. Each option has trade-offs in timing, cost and maintenance.
Adjusting to dentures
Begin with soft foods cut into small pieces, chewing slowly on both sides. Speaking may feel unusual; reading aloud can help your tongue and lips adapt. Increased saliva and minor soreness are common at first. Most people gradually become more comfortable as muscles learn to hold the denture.
Sore spots are normal early on and can be relieved at follow-up visits. Do not try to adjust a denture yourself. If something rubs, contact the office. Planning adjustment visits within your time at Long Point avoids prolonged discomfort while you are away.
Daily care
Rinse dentures after meals and brush them daily with a soft brush and denture cleaner. Avoid regular toothpaste and hot water. Remove dentures at night where advised and store them in water or solution. Clean over a towel or water-filled basin to cushion any drop.
Brush gums, tongue and any remaining teeth daily. Keep regular dental visits even without natural teeth, since gums and soft tissues should still be examined, including oral cancer screening. Report persistent sore spots, looseness or changes in bite.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment and describe whether you are new to dentures or replacing an existing set. The team can explain the steps and likely number of appointments.
Bring any current dentures and a medication list, and write down the questions most important to you.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Modern dentures can look quite natural. Tooth shape, colour and position are chosen with your input. Previewing the setup before the denture is finished allows changes to be made.
Most foods become manageable with practice, but very hard or sticky foods can be challenging. Cutting food into small pieces and chewing on both sides helps stability and comfort.
Dentures often last several years, but gums change and teeth wear. Relines or replacement may be needed. Regular checkups help determine when adjustments or a new set would help.
Yes. Gums and soft tissues should be examined regularly, and the fit of the denture checked. Changes in the mouth can affect comfort and health even without natural teeth.
Some soreness is common in the first weeks. Follow-up appointments allow the dentist to relieve pressure areas. Contact the office rather than putting up with persistent pain.
Missing several teeth or all of them? Long Point patients can compare complete and partial dentures, fitting steps and adjustment with our Port Dover team.
Cracked plate, broken tooth or a denture gone loose? Long Point patients can arrange repairs and relines at our Port Dover office instead of using glue.
