Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth, either replacing a full arch or filling gaps between natural teeth. They can help you chew, speak clearly and support the lips and cheeks. Modern dentures can look natural, but every new denture involves an adjustment period that is easier when you know what to expect.
Whether you have worn dentures for years or are facing them for the first time, our Port Dover office welcomes patients from La Salette for denture consultations. The dentist will examine your mouth, listen to your concerns and explain which denture approach suits your situation.

Getting started
Tell the dentist what you find hardest, whether it is chewing certain foods, speaking, appearance or comfort. If you already wear dentures, describe what you like and dislike about them. This information helps guide decisions about tooth shape, colour and the type of denture recommended.
The dentist checks your gums, bone ridges and any remaining teeth. If teeth need removal, the timing of extractions and denture placement will be discussed. Some patients receive an immediate denture on the day of extraction, while others wait for healing before the final denture is made.
Making the denture
The process typically begins with impressions of your gums and records of how your jaws relate. These help the lab build a base and arrange teeth. You may be asked about tooth colour and shape, and photos of your earlier smile can be a useful reference.
A try-in allows you to see and feel the denture before it is finished. You can check appearance, speech and bite and request changes. At delivery, the dentist checks the fit and explains how to insert, remove and care for your denture.
Adapting
Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew on both sides at the same time to help balance the denture. Reading aloud can help your tongue and lips adapt to the new shape. Many people find speech and chewing improve noticeably over the first few weeks.
Sore spots are common as your gums adjust. Rather than stopping wear or adjusting the denture yourself, return for professional adjustments. Small changes can make a big difference to comfort. Let the dentist know if gagging, persistent soreness or looseness continues.
Daily care
Remove dentures daily for cleaning with a soft brush and denture cleanser. Avoid regular toothpaste, which can scratch the surface. Clean your gums and tongue gently. Unless advised otherwise, take dentures out overnight and store them in water or a soaking solution.
Gums and bone continue to change, so dentures may eventually need relining or replacing. Regular checkups allow the dentist to examine the fit and your oral tissues, including screening for sores or other changes. Report cracks, sore spots or increasing looseness promptly.
Planning your appointment
Book a denture consultation at our Port Dover office. Mention whether this is your first denture or a replacement, and ask how many appointments are typically involved.
If you have an existing denture, bring it with you, along with any photos showing your natural smile before teeth were lost.

Dentures may last several years, but changes in your gums and normal wear mean they eventually need relining or replacing. Regular checkups help determine when adjustments are needed.
Speech may feel different at first. Most people adapt within a few weeks with practice, such as reading aloud. If certain sounds remain difficult, the dentist may be able to adjust the denture.
Many foods become manageable with practice. Start with soft foods and progress gradually. Very sticky or hard foods may remain challenging. The dentist can offer tips specific to your denture.
Some people find adhesive helpful, but a well-fitting denture should not depend on large amounts of it. If you need more adhesive over time, the fit may have changed and should be checked.
An immediate denture is placed on the same day teeth are removed, so you are not without teeth during healing. It often needs adjustments or relining as the gums change over the following months.
Missing several or all teeth? La Salette patients can compare complete and partial dentures in Port Dover, including fittings, adjustment and daily care.
A cracked denture or one that has loosened over time can often be repaired or relined. La Salette patients can learn what to bring and what to avoid at home.
