Removable tooth replacement

Good dentures start with an honest look at what you need.

Dentures replace missing teeth with a removable appliance. They can help with chewing, speech and appearance, and they support the lips and cheeks so the face does not look sunken. Getting used to dentures takes time, and the fit naturally changes as gums and bone reshape. Knowing what to expect at each stage helps make the transition smoother and less frustrating.

Whether you are new to dentures or your current set is worn out, our Port Dover office welcomes patients from Fishers Glen for an assessment. The dentist will examine your mouth, listen to what you want from a denture and talk through options, including complete, partial and implant-supported designs.

First conversation

Explain what matters most to you.

Your goals and concerns

Some people care most about eating comfortably, others about appearance, speech or confidence in social situations. Share any worries, such as the denture slipping while talking or looking artificial. If you already have an old denture, describe what you like and dislike about it, since that history is one of the most useful guides for designing the next one.

Examining your mouth

The dentist examines your gums, any remaining teeth, the shape of your jaw ridges and the soft tissues of your mouth. X-rays may be taken to check roots and bone. The height and shape of your ridges and the health of remaining teeth all affect which type of denture is suitable and how stable it is likely to feel.

Types

There is more than one kind of denture.

Complete and partial dentures

Complete dentures replace every tooth in an upper or lower arch and rest on the gums. Partial dentures fill gaps between natural teeth and usually attach with clasps. Immediate dentures can be placed on the day teeth are removed, which avoids a period without teeth, but they generally need relining as the gums heal and shrink.

Implant-supported options

For people who struggle with a loose denture, especially on the lower jaw, implants can be used to anchor it and improve stability when chewing and speaking. Suitability depends on bone volume, general health and your ability to clean around the attachments. Ask whether this option is worth assessing alongside a conventional denture. It is not right for everyone.

Adjusting

Give yourself time to adapt.

  1. Eating and speaking

Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and try chewing on both sides at once to keep the denture balanced. Reading aloud at home can help your tongue and lips adjust to new shapes. Your mouth may produce extra saliva for a little while. These changes usually settle over the first few weeks as you gain practice.

  2. Sore spots and adjustments

Sore spots are common early on because the denture presses unevenly until it is fine-tuned. Follow-up visits allow the dentist to ease pressure points with small adjustments. Do not try to file or reshape the denture yourself. If a sore spot lasts more than a few days, bleeds or makes it hard to wear the denture, call the office.

Daily care

Clean dentures and healthy gums go together.

  • Cleaning routine

Remove and brush your denture daily with a soft denture brush and a cleaner recommended by the team. Regular toothpaste can scratch the surface, and hot water can warp it. Brush your gums, tongue and any natural teeth gently as well. Most people store the denture in water or a soaking solution overnight so the gums can rest.

  • Long-term checkups

Even with no natural teeth, regular dental visits remain important. The dentist checks how the denture fits and examines your gums, palate, tongue and cheeks for irritation or unusual changes. Relines, repairs or replacement may be needed over time, and catching fit problems early helps prevent sores and chewing difficulties from building up. Bring the denture to each visit.

Planning your appointment

Denture consultations from Fishers Glen.

Call our Port Dover office to book a denture assessment. Let the team know whether you already wear a denture, which teeth are missing and the main problems or goals you would like to discuss with the dentist.

Bring your current denture, if you have one, along with a list of medications, since some can cause dry mouth that affects denture comfort.

Denture questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures often need relining or replacement after several years because the mouth keeps changing and the teeth on the denture wear down. The dentist can check your denture at regular visits and let you know when a reline, repair or new set would be sensible.

Will dentures change how I look?

Well-made dentures support the lips and cheeks and can restore a natural appearance. You will have a chance to review tooth shape, shade and lip support at the try-in stage, so speak up about anything you would like changed before the denture is finished.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

Most foods can be managed with practice, though very hard, sticky or tough foods may remain difficult. Cutting food into small pieces and chewing on both sides helps. Your confidence with eating usually grows over the first weeks as you get used to the denture.

Do I need checkups if I have no teeth?

Yes. Regular visits allow the dentist to check the fit of your denture and examine the gums and soft tissues, including looking for signs of oral cancer. Problems such as sores or bone changes are easier to manage when found early.

What if my denture feels loose?

A loose denture is common as the gums and bone change shape over time. A reline or adjustment may restore a better fit. Book an assessment rather than relying on more and more adhesive, which can mask a problem that needs attention.
