Replacing teeth, restoring routine

Good dentures are planned around your mouth, your habits and your goals.

Dentures are removable appliances that replace missing teeth and some of the surrounding tissue. They help with eating, speaking and the shape of the face. While they cannot fully replicate natural teeth, well-made and well-fitted dentures allow many people to return to a comfortable everyday routine after tooth loss.

If you live in Cultus and are thinking about dentures for the first time, or wondering whether your current set could fit better, our Port Dover team can help. We will examine your mouth, talk about expectations and explain the steps involved in making dentures that suit you.

First conversation

Start by sharing what you hope dentures will do for you.

Talking about your goals

Some people want to chew a wider range of foods, others want to feel confident smiling or speaking. If you already wear dentures, tell the dentist what bothers you about them. Realistic goals help set expectations, since dentures feel different from natural teeth and take time to get used to. Knowing this up front makes the first weeks easier.

Reviewing your oral health

The dentist examines your gums, remaining teeth and jaw ridges and may take X-rays. If extractions are needed, they will explain whether dentures can be placed right away or after healing. Health conditions, dry mouth and medications can affect comfort, so share your medical history openly. Bring your current denture along even if you dislike it, since it shows what to improve.

Types of dentures

There is more than one way to replace teeth.

Complete, partial and immediate dentures

Complete dentures replace a whole arch, partial dentures fill gaps between natural teeth and immediate dentures are placed on the day teeth are removed. Immediate dentures often need adjustments and relines as healing progresses. The dentist will explain which type matches your situation and timeline. Ask what a typical first year with your chosen type looks like.

Implant-supported alternatives

For people who struggle with loose lower dentures, implant-supported options may improve stability. These involve surgery and additional planning. Ask whether you might be a candidate and how implant options compare with conventional dentures in terms of time, maintenance and overall commitment. Some people start with a conventional denture and add implants later, so the choice need not be made all at once.

Making your dentures

Several steps help create a comfortable fit.

  1. Impressions, measurements and try-in

The process typically begins with impressions of your mouth and records of how your jaws relate. A try-in stage lets you see the arrangement of teeth in wax before the denture is finished. Speak up about shape, colour and how your lips look. Changes are easier to make at this stage than after the denture is processed.

  2. Final fitting and adjustments

At delivery, the dentist checks fit, bite and comfort, then teaches you how to insert, remove and clean the dentures. Sore spots are common in the first weeks. Follow-up appointments allow small adjustments that can make a considerable difference to comfort as your mouth adapts. Wear the denture for a few hours before those visits so any sore spots are easy to find.

Everyday life

Patience and practice make the transition easier.

  • Eating, speaking and adapting

Begin with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew slowly on both sides. Practise speaking by reading aloud. Your mouth may produce extra saliva at first. These challenges usually improve over several weeks. Contact the office if you have persistent soreness or the dentures feel very unstable. Patience usually pays off within the first month or two.

  • Cleaning and regular checkups

Brush dentures daily with a soft denture brush, soak them as directed and rinse after meals. Clean your gums and tongue too. Remove dentures overnight unless advised otherwise. Even without natural teeth, regular checkups are important to examine the soft tissues and check fit. Store dentures in water or a soaking solution so they keep their shape overnight.

Denture questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will dentures look natural?

Modern dentures are designed to look like natural teeth, with shade and shape chosen to suit your face. The try-in stage lets you see and comment on the appearance before they are finished, while changes are still simple.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

Many people return to most foods, though very hard or sticky foods can be challenging. Start with soft foods and progress gradually. Chewing on both sides helps keep dentures stable, and small bites are easier to manage.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures wear and the mouth changes over time, so they often need relines and eventual replacement. Regular checkups help the dentist recommend adjustments before problems develop. Many dentures are replaced after several years of use.

Should I use denture adhesive?

Adhesive can help some people feel more secure, but well-fitting dentures should not rely heavily on it. Needing more adhesive over time can be a sign the fit has changed and a reline may help.

Do I still need dental checkups with dentures?

Yes. Checkups allow the dentist to examine your gums and soft tissues, check denture fit and screen for oral health issues such as sore spots or unusual changes that can go unnoticed under a denture.
