Losing teeth affects chewing, speech, appearance and confidence. Dentures are removable replacements that can help with all of these. They have improved a great deal over the years, but they still feel different from natural teeth and usually take time to get used to. Realistic expectations make the adjustment period much easier.
Whether you are considering your first denture or replacing an older set, people from Boston and the surrounding rural area are welcome at our Port Dover office. Share what you hope dentures will help with, and any problems you have had in the past, so the dentist can plan around them.

Getting started
The dentist will examine your gums, any remaining teeth and the shape of the jaw ridges. If natural teeth are still present, some may need treatment or removal before a denture is made. X-rays can show bone levels and hidden problems. These findings help determine whether a complete or partial denture is appropriate for you.
Think about what matters most: eating a wider range of foods, speaking more clearly, filling a visible gap or simply feeling more comfortable smiling. Share these priorities openly. The dentist can explain what dentures can realistically achieve and where implant support or other options might help if stability is a particular concern, especially for a lower denture.
Making them
Impressions capture the shape of your gums and any remaining teeth. Bite records show how your jaws relate to each other. You and the dentist will choose the shape and shade of the teeth. These details guide the laboratory that makes the denture, so take your time and ask questions during this stage rather than rushing the choices.
Many dentures go through a try-in stage, where the teeth are set in wax so you can see and feel how they look before the final version is made. This is your chance to comment on appearance, lip support and how your bite feels. Speaking up now, even about small details, can save a series of adjustments later.
Adjusting
Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew evenly on both sides. Speaking may feel awkward at first; reading aloud can help you adapt faster. Your tongue and cheek muscles learn to help hold the denture in place over time. Patience during these weeks is normal and expected, and most people find each week a little easier than the last.
Sore spots are common as your gums adapt to pressure. Rather than putting up with pain, contact the office so the denture can be adjusted. Several follow-up visits are often needed after a new denture is delivered. These small changes can make a big difference to everyday comfort, so it is worth keeping each appointment.
Daily care
Brush dentures daily with a soft brush and a cleaner made for them, as regular toothpaste can be abrasive. Rinse after meals. Remove them overnight if advised and store them in water or a soaking solution so they do not dry out. Handle them over a towel or a basin of water to avoid breakage if dropped.
Even with no natural teeth, regular checkups matter. The dentist will check the fit, look for sore areas and examine your mouth for changes that need attention, including signs of oral cancer. Over time, gums shrink and dentures may need relining, repair or replacement to stay comfortable. Bring the denture to every checkup so its fit can be reviewed.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a denture consultation. Let the team know whether you currently have natural teeth, an old denture or both, and what has been bothering you.
Bring any current denture and a list of medications, since some medicines affect saliva and how comfortable a denture feels.

It varies from person to person, but many people need several weeks to adjust to eating and speaking with new dentures. Follow-up adjustments help considerably, and practice with soft foods and reading aloud can speed things up.
Many foods become manageable with practice, but very hard, sticky or tough foods can remain difficult. Cutting food into smaller pieces and chewing on both sides helps. Implant support may improve chewing for some people.
Some people find a small amount helpful, especially at first. If you need more and more adhesive to keep a denture in place, it may no longer fit well and should be checked by the dentist.
Yes. Checkups allow the dentist to assess the fit, look for sore spots and examine your mouth for other changes, including signs of disease. The gums and bone change over time, which affects how dentures sit.
Yes. The shape, size and shade of the teeth are chosen to suit your face. Try-in stages let you see the appearance before the denture is finished and request changes if something does not look right.

A cracked or slipping denture can often be fixed. Boston patients can bring theirs to our Port Dover office to see if a repair or reline will help.
