Dentures can crack when dropped, lose a tooth or slowly become loose as the gums and bone underneath change shape. A loose denture may rub, cause sore spots or make eating and speaking harder. Home glue kits and thick layers of adhesive can seem like quick fixes, but they often distort the denture and can make a proper repair more difficult.
Walsingham denture wearers can contact our Port Dover office to describe the problem. The dentist will examine the denture and your mouth, explain whether a repair, a reline or a new denture makes the most sense, and let you know how long you may be without it during the work.

What went wrong
Cracks through the base, a broken clasp on a partial denture or a tooth that has come off are common repair needs. Keep all the pieces together and bring them along. Note how the damage happened, such as a drop or biting something hard, since this can help identify whether the denture has an underlying fit problem.
A denture that slips when you eat or talk, traps food underneath or causes sore spots may no longer match the shape of your gums. This happens gradually for most wearers. Do not try to reshape the denture yourself. Sore spots that do not heal within a week or two should be checked by the dentist.
Repair or reline
A clean break or a missing tooth can often be repaired if the rest of the denture fits well. The dentist will check whether the denture is worth repairing or whether repeated breaks suggest a poor fit, worn teeth or an aging base that may be better replaced. You will be told how long the repair is expected to take.
A reline adds new material to the fitting surface of the denture so it matches the current shape of your gums. A hard reline is common, while a soft reline may be suggested for tender gums. Some relines are done chairside, others need laboratory time. The dentist will explain which type suits you.
The appointment
Before a repair or reline, the dentist examines your gums, palate and any remaining teeth for sore areas, infection or other changes. An impression may be taken inside the denture to capture the current shape of your mouth. If tissue is very irritated, the dentist may suggest letting it settle before taking the impression.
When the work is complete, the denture is tried in and checked for fit, bite and comfort. Adjustments are made as needed. A relined denture may feel tighter at first. Let the dentist know about any pressure points, and book a follow-up if sore spots develop in the days that follow.
Preventing problems
Clean dentures over a sink filled with water or a folded towel, so they do not break if dropped. Use a soft brush and a cleaner recommended by the team, not regular toothpaste, which can scratch. Store dentures in water or a soaking solution when out of your mouth, and keep them away from pets.
Have your dentures and mouth checked regularly, even if they feel fine. The dentist can spot early wear, fit changes or tissue problems. Relines are often needed every few years, and dentures eventually wear out. Planning ahead means fewer emergency trips from Walsingham with a broken denture.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to describe the damage or fit problem and how long you have had the denture. The team can explain the likely timeline and whether you may need to leave the denture for the repair.
Bring the denture and all broken pieces. If you have a spare or older denture, bring that as well in case it is useful while the work is done.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
It is best not to. Household glues can be harmful, may not hold and can distort the denture, making a proper repair harder or impossible. Bring the pieces to the dentist instead.
It varies, but many people need a reline every few years as their gums and bone change. Regular checkups help the dentist determine when a reline is due.
Possibly, for some or all of a day, depending on the repair and whether laboratory work is required. Ask when booking so you can plan meals and activities around it.
A relined denture fits the current shape of your mouth more closely, which can feel snug at first. If it causes pain or sore spots, contact the office for an adjustment.
If the denture is old, worn, repeatedly breaking or no longer fits even after relining, a new one may serve you better. The dentist will explain the options after examining it.
