Dentures take a lot of daily wear. Over time the gums and bone beneath them change shape, which can leave a once-snug denture loose, rubbing or rocking. Accidents also happen, and dentures can crack, lose a tooth or break a clasp. Many of these problems can be fixed with a repair or reline instead of a whole new denture.
Walsh residents can bring a damaged or loose denture to our Port Dover office for assessment. The dentist will check the denture and your mouth, explain whether a repair, reline or replacement is most sensible, and let you know how long the work may take.

Signs of trouble
A denture that slips when you talk, collects food underneath, needs more adhesive than it used to or causes sore spots may no longer fit your gums well. Clicking, difficulty chewing firmer foods and changes in facial appearance can also signal that the base needs adjusting. These changes often creep up slowly, so they are easy to put up with for too long.
Cracks, chips, a missing tooth or broken clasps on a partial denture weaken the appliance and may irritate your mouth. Do not wait for a small crack to become a full break that leaves you without teeth. Stop wearing the denture if a sharp edge is cutting your gums or cheek, and arrange an assessment as soon as you reasonably can.
Repair or reline
Repairs can often rejoin a cracked base, replace a broken or lost tooth or fix a clasp. If the denture is old, badly worn or repeatedly breaking in the same place, the dentist may discuss whether a new denture would serve you better in the long run. Partial denture repairs depend on the framework design and the health of your remaining teeth.
A reline adds new material to the fitting surface so the denture matches your current gum shape again. Soft relines use a cushioned material that can help with tender or thin gums, while hard relines are more durable and last longer. The dentist will recommend the type suited to your mouth, comfort and how quickly your gums are changing.
The process
The dentist examines your gums for sore spots, infection or other changes and checks the denture’s overall condition. For a reline or some repairs, an impression is taken inside the denture to capture your current gum shape accurately. Tell the team about any medical changes or weight loss, which can affect fit more than people expect.
Some repairs and relines may require you to leave the denture for a period while the work is completed. Ask in advance how long this is likely to be, so you can plan meals, social plans and the trip back from Walsh. When it is returned, the dentist checks fit and makes any small adjustments needed for comfort.
Care afterward
After a reline, the denture may feel snugger and take a few days to feel natural again. Sore spots can occur as the tissues adjust; book a follow-up rather than adjusting the denture yourself at home. Soft reline materials need gentle cleaning and may need replacement sooner than hard relines, so ask how long yours is expected to last.
Clean dentures over a folded towel or a basin of water so they do not break if dropped on a hard sink or floor. Use a denture brush and non-abrasive cleanser, and store them in water or solution as instructed. Avoid home repair kits and household glues, which can damage the denture, irritate your gums and affect fit.

Before you book

It is best not to. Household glues can be harmful to your mouth and may make professional repair harder or impossible. Keep all the pieces together and contact the office to arrange an assessment of the damage.
It varies with how quickly your gums and bone change. Many dentures need a reline after some years of wear. Regular checks help the dentist recommend relining when the fit begins to change, before sore spots develop.
Sometimes. Certain repairs and relines need the denture to be sent out or left with the office for a time. Ask how long it will take so you can plan meals and commitments around it in advance.
No. A reline updates the fitting surface of your existing denture. A new denture replaces the whole appliance, including the teeth, and may be advised if the current one is badly worn, stained or repeatedly breaking.
As gums change shape, a denture can press unevenly and cause sore spots or ulcers. A reline or adjustment may help considerably. Persistent sores should always be checked to rule out other problems in the mouth.
