Dentures are durable, but they are not indestructible. Teeth can pop off, bases can crack if dropped, and over time the gums and bone underneath gradually change shape, leaving a once-snug denture loose. A loose denture can cause sore spots, make chewing harder and affect confidence when speaking, so these changes are worth addressing rather than tolerating.
If you live in Vittoria and your denture has broken or started to feel different, contact our Port Dover office and describe the problem. The team will explain whether a repair, a reline or a new denture is likely to be the best route, and how long you might be without the appliance while work is completed.

Spot the problem
A denture that slips when you talk or eat, needs more adhesive than before, causes new sore spots or traps more food underneath may no longer match the shape of your gums. Clicking sounds and changes in your bite can also be signs. These changes happen gradually, so you may not notice them until discomfort builds. Mention them at your next visit or sooner if they bother you.
Cracks in the acrylic base, a broken or missing tooth, a bent or snapped clasp on a partial denture, or rough edges all call for repair. Even a small crack can spread with chewing pressure. Keep all broken pieces together in a safe container and avoid wearing a damaged denture if it has sharp edges that could injure your gums or tongue.
What to avoid
Household glues and some over-the-counter repair kits can contain chemicals that are unsafe in the mouth, and they rarely align pieces accurately. A poorly glued denture may change your bite or irritate the tissues. It can also make a proper laboratory repair more difficult or impossible. It is usually better to bring the pieces in exactly as they are.
Adhesive can help with stability for some people, but using more and more to hold a loose denture often hides a fit problem that is getting worse. Excess adhesive can also be hard to clean and may irritate the gums. If you find yourself relying on it heavily, ask the dentist whether a reline would help.
Repairs and relines
Cracked bases, broken teeth and some clasp problems can often be repaired. The dentist will examine the denture and your mouth to make sure the break was not caused by an underlying fit issue. Some repairs require the denture to be sent to a laboratory, so ask how long it will take and whether you will be without it for a period.
A reline adds new material to the fitting surface of the denture so it matches the current shape of your gums. A soft reline may be used for sensitive tissues, while a hard reline is more durable. If the denture is old, heavily worn or repeatedly breaking, the dentist may suggest a new one instead and explain why.
After the fix
After a reline, the denture may feel tighter or slightly different until your gums settle. Small pressure spots can appear and can usually be adjusted at a follow-up visit. Do not file or trim the denture yourself. If speech or chewing feels noticeably different, give it a few days and then contact the office if it does not improve.
Regular dental visits are still important for denture wearers. The dentist checks the fit of the appliance, the health of your gums and the soft tissues of the mouth, including screening for unusual patches. Relines are often needed periodically as the mouth continues to change, and checkups help catch that before it becomes uncomfortable. Bring the denture to every visit.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and describe the damage or fit problem. Ask whether the denture can be repaired or relined on site or needs to go to a lab, and how long it may be away.
Bring the denture and every broken piece in a sealed container. Mention sore spots or changes in how you chew or speak.

Many cracks can be repaired, depending on where and how the denture broke. The dentist will also check whether a poor fit contributed to the break, since fixing the crack without addressing the fit could lead to the same problem happening again.
It varies. The gums and bone continue to change after teeth are lost, so many dentures need relining periodically. Regular checkups help the dentist recognize when the fit has changed enough that a reline would improve comfort and stability.
That depends on the type of repair and whether laboratory work is needed. Ask the office when booking so you can plan meals and social commitments. Some minor adjustments can be made during a single visit, while others take longer.
No. Household glues are not designed for use in the mouth and can be harmful. They can also distort the fit and make proper repair difficult. Keep the pieces together and bring them to the office for assessment instead.
If the denture is very old, badly worn, repeatedly breaking or no longer fits even after relining, replacement may be more practical. The dentist will explain the reasons and what the process of making a new denture involves.
