Dentures can crack, lose a tooth or gradually stop fitting as the gums and bone change shape. A repair addresses damage such as a fracture or broken clasp, while a reline adds new material to the fitting surface so the denture sits more closely against the gums. Both can extend the useful life of a denture.
Being without a denture is disruptive, so it is reasonable to ask how long a repair or reline is likely to take before you leave Selkirk. Our Port Dover office can assess the damage or fit and explain whether a repair, reline, adjustment or new denture is the most sensible next step.

Spotting the problem
A denture that slips when eating or speaking, needs more adhesive than before, causes new sore spots or traps food underneath may no longer fit well. Changes in your face shape or bite can also be clues. These problems often develop gradually, and a reline or adjustment may restore comfort and stability without making an entirely new denture.
Visible cracks, a tooth that has come loose or fallen out, a broken clasp on a partial denture and sharp or rough edges indicate damage. Even a small crack can grow and lead to a full break. Avoid wearing a broken denture that cuts or irritates your mouth, and contact the office to have it assessed.
What not to do
Household glues may contain substances that are not safe for the mouth and can make professional repair more difficult. Over-the-counter reline kits can change the fit unevenly, affecting your bite and causing sore spots. Filing or bending clasps yourself may weaken the denture. Bring the denture to the office in its current condition instead.
If a denture breaks and you cannot wear it, keep all pieces in a clean container and bring them with you. Soft foods can help until it is repaired. Denture adhesive used as directed may help a slightly loose denture temporarily, but heavy reliance on adhesive suggests the fit should be assessed.
Repair or reline
Simple repairs, such as reattaching a tooth or fixing a clean crack, may be possible relatively quickly, while others need laboratory work. Partial dentures with broken metal frames may be more complex. The dentist will examine the damage, explain what is involved and give you an idea of how long you may be without the denture.
A reline involves adding material to the inside of the denture to match the current shape of your gums. Some relines are done chairside, while others are processed in a laboratory for longer-lasting results. If the denture is very old, worn or repeatedly breaking, the dentist may suggest that a new denture would be a better long-term solution.
Keeping dentures working
Clean dentures daily with a soft brush and suitable cleaner, and rinse after meals. Handle them over a folded towel or basin of water so they are less likely to break if dropped. Store them as recommended, and keep them away from pets. Avoid hot water, which can warp the denture base.
Attend regular checkups even if you have no natural teeth. The dentist can examine your gums and soft tissues, check fit and recommend relines before problems become severe. Report sore spots, looseness or changes in your bite promptly, as early adjustments can often prevent bigger issues later.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and describe the damage or fit issue. Ask whether the repair or reline is likely to require leaving the denture so you can plan for that time.
Bring all broken pieces in a clean container, and mention how old the denture is and any previous repairs or relines.

Many cracks and fractures can be repaired, depending on their location and the denture’s condition. Bring the denture and any pieces to the office. The dentist will assess whether repair or replacement is the better option.
Signs include slipping, increased need for adhesive, new sore spots and food getting trapped underneath. These suggest the fit has changed. The dentist can check the fit and recommend a reline or adjustment if appropriate.
It is not recommended. Household glues may not be safe for the mouth and can make professional repair harder. Keep the pieces together and contact the office for a proper assessment and repair.
It depends on the type of repair or reline. Some are done relatively quickly, while laboratory work takes longer. Ask the office when booking so you can plan meals and activities accordingly.
If a denture is very old, worn, breaks repeatedly or no longer fits after relining, a new one may be more practical. The dentist will explain the reasoning and compare repair with replacement.
