Dentures can break if dropped, develop cracks from wear or lose teeth over time. Even without damage, the gums and bone beneath them gradually change shape, which can make a once-snug denture feel loose, cause sore spots or make chewing difficult. Repairs fix damage, while relines resurface the fitting side so the denture sits more closely again.
If you wear dentures at Peacock Point, whether full-time or during summer stays at the cottage, you can arrange repairs or relines at our Port Dover office. Call first to describe the problem so the team can explain what the repair is likely to involve.

Spotting problems
Cracks, chips, a missing tooth, a broken clasp on a partial or a fracture through the base are obvious signs a repair is needed. Even a small crack can spread with use, so stop wearing a broken denture if it has sharp edges or pieces that could come loose. Keep all fragments and bring them with you.
A denture that slips when you talk, collects food underneath, causes sore spots or needs more adhesive than before may no longer fit well. Clicking sounds and difficulty chewing are also clues. These changes often develop gradually as the gums shrink, and a reline may restore comfort without the need for an entirely new denture.
Avoid DIY fixes
Household glues can contain chemicals that are harmful in the mouth and can make professional repair more difficult. Home reline kits may change the bite or create pressure points. Bending a clasp can weaken or break it. Although it is tempting to make a quick fix, bringing the denture to the office usually gives a better and safer result.
If your denture breaks and you are without it, eat soft foods and avoid chewing on sore areas. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water if gums are irritated. If you have an older denture, it may serve temporarily. Call the office to explain the problem and ask how long the repair is likely to take.
Repair or reline
Many cracks, fractures and missing teeth can be repaired by bonding new material or replacing the tooth. Some repairs can be completed fairly quickly, while others need to go to a lab. The dentist will examine the denture and your mouth to make sure the break was not caused by an underlying fit or bite problem.
A hard reline adds durable material to the fitting surface for a longer-lasting improvement. A soft reline uses a more cushioning material, which can help with tender gums but may need replacing sooner. Relines may be done in the office or sent to a lab. Ask how long you will be without the denture.
Ongoing care
Clean your denture daily with a soft brush and appropriate cleaner. Handle it over a folded towel or a sink partly filled with water to cushion accidental drops. Keep it moist when not wearing it and away from hot water, which can warp the base. Remove it at night unless advised otherwise to rest your gums.
Have your denture and mouth checked regularly, even if you have no natural teeth. The dentist can assess fit, look for sore spots and screen the soft tissues for any unusual changes. Many dentures need relining every few years as the gums change. Contact the office if sores do not heal or the fit changes suddenly.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to describe the damage or fit problem. The team can explain whether a repair or reline is likely and how long you may be without the denture.
Bring the denture, any broken pieces and your spare denture if you have one, along with a list of current medications.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Many cracks, fractures and missing teeth can be repaired. The dentist will examine the denture and your mouth to determine whether repair is suitable or whether a new denture would be a better long-term solution for you.
It depends on the repair or reline needed. Some can be completed relatively quickly, while others require lab work. Ask the office when booking so you can plan meals and activities around the time without your denture.
A hard reline uses durable material for a long-lasting fit. A soft reline uses cushioning material that may help sensitive gums but typically needs replacing sooner. The dentist will recommend which suits you.
It is best not to. Household glues can be harmful and may make proper repair harder. Denture adhesives are not meant to fix breaks. Bring the denture to the office for a professional repair instead.
Many dentures benefit from a reline every few years as the gums and bone change. Regular checkups help the dentist determine when your denture’s fit is no longer adequate and a reline would help.
