Dentures do not last forever unchanged. Acrylic can crack if dropped, teeth can chip off, clasps can bend and the gums beneath gradually change shape, which can make a once-snug denture rock or rub. A repair fixes physical damage, while a reline reshapes the fitting surface to match your gums again. Sometimes a new denture is the better answer.
Long Point patients with a damaged or loose denture can call our Port Dover office to describe the problem. The team can explain whether a repair or reline appointment is suitable and how long the denture may need to stay with the lab.

What went wrong
Note exactly what happened: a crack through the plate, a tooth that popped off, a bent or broken clasp on a partial or a piece missing. Keep all fragments in a bag and bring them along. Avoid using household glue, which can damage the acrylic, irritate the gums and make a proper repair harder.
If the denture has become loose, wobbles when chewing, catches food underneath or causes new sore spots, the fit may have changed. Weight changes, bone loss and time all contribute. Increasing amounts of adhesive are often a sign a reline or replacement should be considered.
Repair or reline
Simple cracks and replaced teeth can often be repaired, sometimes in a relatively short time depending on laboratory involvement. Ask how long you might be without the denture. The dentist will also look at why it broke, since an ill-fitting denture is more likely to crack again.
A reline adds new material to the fitting surface to match your current gums. It can restore comfort and stability when the denture is otherwise in good shape. If teeth are worn, the denture is old or repeated breaks occur, a new denture may be recommended instead.
The appointment
The dentist will examine the denture and the tissues underneath for sore spots, ulcers or signs of infection. Any irritation may need time to heal before a reline. Impressions may be taken inside the denture. If lab work is needed, you will be told how long it is likely to take.
When the denture returns, it is checked in your mouth for fit, comfort and bite. Small adjustments are common. You may need a follow-up visit after a few days of wear to relieve pressure points, especially after a reline that changes how the denture sits.
Preventing problems
Clean dentures over a folded towel or a basin of water so a slip does not end in a crack. Use a soft brush and a denture cleaner, not regular toothpaste. Store dentures moist when not worn. Keep them out of reach of pets, which are sometimes drawn to chew them.
Have dentures and gums checked regularly, even if everything feels fine. Gums continue to change over time. Report sore spots that do not heal within a couple of weeks, as persistent irritation should be examined. Early adjustments are usually easier than waiting for a break.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to describe the damage or fit problem. Ask whether the repair can be arranged quickly and how long you may need to go without the denture.
Bring all broken pieces in a sealed bag, and avoid home repair kits or glue, which can make professional repair more difficult.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
It is best not to. Household glues can be toxic, damage the acrylic and create an uneven fit. Keep the pieces and contact the office so the denture can be repaired properly.
It varies. Gums and bone change over time, so many dentures benefit from periodic relines. The dentist can check fit at regular visits and recommend timing for you.
Possibly, depending on the repair and laboratory involvement. Ask when booking how long it may take so you can plan meals and activities around that time.
Repeated breaks can mean the fit has changed, the bite is uneven or the material is fatigued. The dentist will look for underlying causes and may suggest a reline or replacement.
Yes, it is common. Gums and bone shrink gradually. A reline may restore fit, or a new denture may be better if the existing one is worn. Avoid relying on more adhesive.
