Every dental service for Jarvis patientsRestoring fit and function
Dentures can crack if dropped, lose a tooth or gradually loosen as the gums and bone beneath them change shape. A loose denture can cause sore spots, make chewing difficult and affect speech. Repairs fix broken parts, while relines reshape the fitting surface so the denture sits snugly against your gums again.
When a denture breaks or slips, Jarvis wearers can bring it to our Port Dover office for assessment. The team will explain whether a repair, a reline or a new denture makes the most sense.

Spot the problem
Food slipping under the denture, needing more adhesive than before, clicking when you talk, sore spots on the gums or a denture that moves when you chew can all suggest the fit has changed. These changes are often gradual, so you may adapt to them without realizing how much the fit has deteriorated.
Cracks, chips, a broken clasp on a partial or a missing tooth are clear signs of damage. Even a small crack can widen with use. Sharp edges can injure the gums or tongue. Stop wearing a cracked denture if it is uncomfortable and contact the office for advice.
Avoid home fixes
Household glues can be toxic, may not bond properly and can distort the denture, making a professional repair harder. Home reline kits may change the bite or create pressure spots. Filing or trimming the denture yourself can weaken it. It is safer to let the dental team handle adjustments and repairs.
If your denture breaks, keep all the pieces in a sealed bag. If you cannot wear it, stick to soft foods until it is repaired. For a loose denture, a small amount of approved adhesive can help temporarily, but it should not replace an assessment of the fit.
Repair or reline
Simple cracks, broken teeth and some clasp issues can often be repaired, sometimes with the denture returned the same day or within a short time depending on the work required. The dentist will examine the break and explain whether a repair is likely to hold or whether the denture is near the end of its useful life.
A reline adds new material to the fitting surface so it matches your current gum shape. Soft relines can cushion sensitive gums, while hard relines are more durable. A reline may require leaving the denture for a period, so ask how long you will be without it and plan accordingly.
Keeping it right
After a reline, the denture may feel tighter at first. Small sore spots can develop as your gums adjust. Do not try to adjust it yourself; call the office for a follow-up if discomfort persists. Clean the denture daily and handle it over a towel or water to prevent drops.
Even with no obvious problems, dentures benefit from periodic checks of fit, wear and the health of your gums and mouth. Over time, a new denture may be recommended when repairs and relines no longer restore comfort. The dentist can help you plan for that timing.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to describe the problem with your denture. Ask how long a repair or reline might take so you can plan around being without it.
Bring all pieces of a broken denture and any partial clasps, and avoid gluing or adjusting it beforehand.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Some simple repairs can be completed quickly, depending on the damage and lab arrangements. More complex repairs take longer. Call ahead to describe the problem and ask about expected timing.
It varies, as gums and bone change at different rates. Many people need a reline every few years. Regular checkups help identify when the fit has changed enough to warrant one.
Approved adhesive in small amounts can help. Needing increasing amounts usually means the fit has changed. Have the denture checked rather than relying on more adhesive.
It is best not to. Household glues can be harmful and may make a professional repair more difficult. Keep the pieces and contact the office instead.
When repairs and relines no longer restore a comfortable fit, when teeth are badly worn or when your mouth has changed significantly. The dentist can advise when replacement is the better option.
Removable dentures can restore chewing and appearance after tooth loss. Jarvis patients can see how fit is assessed, what adapting takes and how to care for dentures.
Missing several or all teeth? Jarvis patients can compare complete and partial dentures at our Port Dover office, from fit and comfort to cleaning and follow-up.
