Dentures can crack if dropped, lose a tooth after years of chewing or gradually loosen as the gums and bone beneath them change shape. A poor fit can cause sore spots, difficulty eating and trouble speaking. Repairs fix damage to the denture itself, while relines reshape its fitting surface to match your mouth again.
Denture wearers in Glen Meyer can bring a broken or loose appliance to our Port Dover office for assessment. The team can explain whether a repair, a reline or a replacement makes more sense, and how long you may be without the denture during the work.

Spotting problems
A denture that slips when you talk, rocks when you chew or needs more adhesive than before may no longer match your gums. Sore spots, ulcers and redness under the denture are other common signs. Food trapped beneath the plate and clicking noises can also point to a loosening fit. These problems tend to gradually worsen if they are ignored.
Look for cracks in the base, chipped or missing teeth, rough edges and worn chewing surfaces. A crack that seems small can spread quickly with use. If a piece breaks off, keep all the fragments and bring them with you. Avoid wearing a cracked denture for long periods, since it can break further or irritate the gums.
Repair or reline
A clean break in the base, a lost tooth or a broken clasp on a partial denture can often be repaired. The dentist will check whether the rest of the denture still fits well, because a denture that broke due to poor fit may break again after repair. In some cases, both a repair and a reline are recommended together.
When the denture is intact but no longer sits snugly, a reline adds new material to the fitting surface so it matches the current shape of your gums. Relines can be soft or hard, depending on your needs. If the denture is very old, worn or does not fit even after relining, a new denture may be a better investment.
The process
The dentist examines your gums and remaining teeth for sore spots, infection or other changes before working on the denture. For a reline, an impression is taken inside the denture to capture the current shape of your tissues. Ask how long the work will take, whether you will be without the denture and how many visits are expected.
When the denture is returned, the dentist checks its fit, comfort and bite. Small adjustments may be needed in the following days as your mouth settles. Return for those adjustments rather than trying to file or reshape the denture yourself, which can make problems worse or damage the appliance beyond simple repair. Note where any rubbing occurs so it can be found quickly.
Avoiding future damage
Clean your denture over a folded towel or a basin of water, so it is less likely to break if dropped. Use a soft brush and a cleaner recommended for dentures rather than regular toothpaste, which can be abrasive. Store the denture safely when not in your mouth, away from pets and small children who might grab it.
Have your denture and gums checked regularly, even if everything seems fine. Changes in the mouth often happen slowly. Do not use home repair kits or glue, as they can damage the denture and make professional repair difficult. If you notice a crack or fit change, contact the office early before it becomes a larger problem.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to describe the problem with your denture, whether it is cracked, missing a tooth or simply loose. The team can explain the timing and what to bring with you.
Bring all broken pieces if the denture has cracked, and ask whether you will need to leave the denture at the office during the repair.

It is not recommended. Household glues can be toxic and may damage the denture, making professional repair harder or impossible. Temporary home fixes can also alter the fit and cause sore spots. Contact the office for advice about a proper repair.
It varies with how quickly your gums and bone change. Regular checkups help the dentist judge when a reline is needed. Signs such as looseness, rocking or sore spots may indicate a reline is due sooner than expected.
Some repairs and relines can be completed quickly, while others require more time. Ask the team about the expected timeline when you call so you can plan around work, meals and social commitments while the denture is being repaired.
If the denture is in reasonable condition, a repair or reline may restore its function. A very old, worn or repeatedly broken denture may not fit well even after repair. The dentist will assess it and explain which option offers better value and comfort.
After teeth are lost, the bone and gums gradually change shape, so a denture that once fit well may loosen over time. Weight changes and wear on the denture can also contribute. Relines help adapt the denture to these changes.
Thinking about dentures? Glen Meyer residents can learn how the dentist decides on a denture type, what fittings involve and how to adjust to wearing one daily.
Missing several teeth or all of them? Glen Meyer patients can compare complete and partial dentures, the fitting stages and the adjustment period.
