Identify the problem before choosing the fix

A broken appliance and a loose-fitting one may need different care.

A crack, missing denture tooth or uncomfortable base can interrupt meals and conversation. Repair addresses damage to the appliance; a reline changes the fitting surface where appropriate. Neither should be selected without considering the denture’s condition and the mouth supporting it.

Delhi residents can call our Port Dover practice with the details of a denture problem. Explain whether it has broken suddenly or become less comfortable over time, and ask what assessment arrangements are available.

Keep the appliance and pieces

Bring the pieces and the history of how the denture was fitting.

  • Explain the break and any earlier fit problems

Save detached pieces and ask how to bring them with the denture. Explain whether it broke during eating, cleaning or a drop, and whether it had already begun moving or causing soreness. Include earlier repairs and any recent changes in use so the assessment considers the history behind the visible damage.

  • Avoid altering the damaged surfaces

Do not use household glue, heat or tools to make the parts fit. A home repair can alter the relationship between surfaces and make assessment or professional repair more difficult. Ask for advice if a damaged edge is rubbing the mouth.

Assess fit and tissue health

Look at the fit and the mouth before choosing a repair.

Review the mouth, bite and appliance together

The dentist reviews the mouth, bite and denture rather than looking at the broken part in isolation. Sore areas and instability may affect the recommendation. A reline is not automatically suitable for every loose denture, particularly when other parts of the design are no longer appropriate.

Describe the adjustments you make to get through a meal

Explain how much adhesive you use, whether that has increased and which foods or conversations have become difficult. Describe movement and soreness even if you have learned to work around them. These everyday adaptations help show the practical extent of a fit problem that may not be obvious from the broken part alone.

Compare repair, reline and replacement

Choose between repair, relining and replacement with the limits explained.

Understand the purpose and limits of each option

A limited repair may restore a damaged part, while a reline may improve a suitable denture’s relationship with the tissues. In other circumstances, replacement deserves discussion. Ask why the proposed option is appropriate and whether the cause of recurring damage can be addressed.

Plan for appointments and time without the denture

Ask whether the denture needs to stay with the provider, how collection and fitting are arranged and which visits the estimate covers. Discuss the practical effect of being without it before agreeing to the work. Timing depends on the assessed problem and available arrangements, rather than the description of the break alone.

Check the result in use

Review the repaired denture both at fitting and in everyday use.

  1. Check seating, pressure and bite at the return visit

At the return visit, discuss how the repair or reline affects seating, bite and daily care. Mention pressure points or difficulty putting the denture in, and follow the wearing instructions provided. Ask how to arrange further review if a problem becomes apparent during meals after you return to Delhi.

  2. Reassess recurring problems instead of repeating a home fix

If the same problem recurs, arrange review rather than repeating a home fix. The clinician may need to reconsider the fit, structure or broader replacement plan. Keep oral examinations as part of ongoing denture maintenance.

Planning your appointment

Call from Delhi about denture damage or looseness.

Tell our Port Dover team what has broken, whether you can wear the appliance and if there is a sore area. Ask what to bring and whether an assessment appointment is available.

Discuss timing after the problem has been reviewed. If the denture must be left for work, confirm collection and any follow-up fitting arrangements before making travel plans.

Questions about denture repair and fit changes

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Is a reline the same as making a new denture?

No. A reline modifies the fitting surface of an existing appliance when that approach is suitable. It does not automatically correct every problem with tooth position, bite or structure. Ask what it would improve in your case.

Can a cracked denture always be repaired?

The break, material, fit and overall condition need assessment. Repair may be possible, but replacement or another approach may be more appropriate. Bring the appliance and pieces without gluing them so the clinician can review the options.

Will my denture be repaired while I wait?

Timing depends on the work required and available arrangements. Ask after assessment whether the appliance must be left and when fitting or collection can occur. A same-day repair should not be assumed from the type of break alone.

Can adhesive compensate for a denture that keeps moving?

Increasing reliance on adhesive is a reason to discuss fit. It does not establish that the appliance is functioning appropriately. Tell the clinician how it behaves and what you use so the mouth and denture can be assessed together.

What if the repaired denture breaks in the same place again?

Report the recurrence and ask whether the cause has changed or needs further investigation. Repeated failure may require a broader review of fit and structure. Do not assume another identical repair is the only reasonable option.
