Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite bonded to the front of teeth. They can improve teeth that are discoloured, chipped, worn, slightly misshapen or unevenly spaced. Porcelain veneers usually require removing a thin layer of enamel, which means the teeth will always need some kind of covering afterwards. That permanence is worth understanding before you begin.
Walsingham patients can explore veneers through a consultation at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check whether your teeth and gums are healthy enough, look at your bite and habits, and talk through how veneers compare with whitening, bonding or orthodontic treatment for the result you would like.

Suitability
Veneers can cover stubborn stains that whitening cannot lift, restore chipped or worn edges, close small gaps and create a more uniform shape across front teeth. They work best on healthy teeth with enough enamel for bonding. The dentist will look at how many teeth might be involved and how they would blend with the rest of your smile.
Heavy grinding, significant crowding, gum disease or active decay can make veneers less suitable. Sometimes aligners, whitening or bonding can meet your goals with less permanent change. The dentist will explain these alternatives and why one approach may be more appropriate, so you can make an informed choice.
Design
Planning often involves photos, impressions or scans, and sometimes a wax model or temporary mock-up placed over your teeth. This lets you preview the proposed length, width and shape. It is a good time to say what you like and what does not feel like you, since changes are easier at this stage.
The shade should look natural alongside your face and remaining teeth. If you plan to whiten other teeth, do so before veneers are made, because porcelain colour does not change. Ask how the veneer edges will meet the gums and how the final result might look in different lighting.
The process
For porcelain veneers, the teeth are frozen and a thin layer of enamel is removed to make room. Impressions or scans are sent to a dental laboratory, and temporary veneers may be placed. Composite veneers are often built directly on the teeth in one visit, with less or sometimes no enamel removal.
At the bonding appointment, each porcelain veneer is tried in to check fit and colour before being bonded with a special cement and hardened with a curing light. Excess cement is removed, the bite is checked and the edges are polished. You will be shown how to care for the veneers and what to avoid.
Maintenance
Avoid biting nails, chewing ice or using front teeth to open packages. If you grind or clench, a night guard is often recommended to protect veneers. Brush and floss as usual, as the teeth underneath can still decay at the edges. Composite veneers may stain over time and benefit from regular polishing.
Veneers can chip, debond or wear over the years and will eventually need replacing. Gum recession can expose the edges. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the veneers and the gums around them. Contact the office if a veneer feels loose, rough or chipped so it can be assessed promptly.
Planning your appointment
Walsingham patients can book a veneer consultation at our Port Dover office. Mention which teeth concern you and any upcoming events, since porcelain veneers involve laboratory time and more than one visit.
Bring photos of smiles you like and of your own teeth from earlier years. Be ready to discuss grinding, sensitivity and any previous cosmetic work.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Porcelain veneers usually involve removing some enamel, so the teeth will need a covering from then on. The veneers themselves may need replacing over time. Composite veneers can sometimes be more conservative.
Porcelain veneers often last many years with good care, while composite veneers may need more frequent repair or replacement. Grinding, chewing hard objects and gum health all affect longevity.
Well-planned veneers can look very natural. Choosing an appropriate shade, shape and length for your face and teeth helps. Previewing a mock-up lets you see the proposed changes before committing.
No. Porcelain and composite do not respond to whitening the way natural enamel does. If you want lighter teeth, whiten first and have veneers matched to the new shade.
Veneers can make mildly uneven teeth look straighter, but they do not move teeth. Significant crowding or bite problems may be better treated with orthodontics, sometimes followed by veneers.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to fix chips, small gaps and worn edges. Walsingham patients can see what it can do, how long it may last and how it is cared for.
Small uneven edges or a slightly pointed tooth can sometimes be smoothed. Walsingham patients can learn when reshaping suits and when bonding or veneers fit better.
