A considered cosmetic change

Veneers reshape the front of a smile, one tooth at a time.

Veneers are thin coverings, usually porcelain or composite, bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. They can change colour, shape, length and minor spacing, and are often used when whitening, bonding or reshaping cannot achieve the desired result. Because they usually involve removing some enamel, veneers are a long-term commitment worth planning carefully.

Walsh patients considering veneers can discuss them at our Port Dover office. The dentist will assess your teeth, gums and bite, talk through your goals and explain whether veneers are suitable, how many teeth might be involved and what maintenance and future replacement may look like.

Are they right

Veneers suit some smiles better than others.

What veneers can address

Veneers may help with discolouration that does not respond to whitening, chipped or worn edges, small gaps, uneven shapes or teeth that look too short for your face. They can create a more uniform appearance across the front teeth while keeping the natural tooth underneath. For the right patient, the change can be significant and long-lasting.

When other options make more sense

Active decay, gum disease, heavy grinding or significant misalignment may need to be addressed first, or may make veneers a poor choice altogether. Sometimes orthodontic treatment, bonding or whitening provides a more conservative path to a similar result. The dentist will explain the trade-offs honestly, including how much enamel each approach would require removing from your teeth.

Design

Planning lets you see the change before committing.

Previewing the result

Photos, models or a temporary mock-up placed over your teeth can show how the proposed veneers will look and feel when you smile and speak. You can discuss shade, length and shape, and give feedback before anything permanent is made. Taking time at this stage often leads to a result you are more comfortable with for years to come.

Porcelain or composite

Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant and long-lasting but usually require enamel preparation and lab fabrication over a couple of visits. Composite veneers can often be placed in one visit and repaired more easily, but they may stain or chip sooner. The dentist will compare them for your situation, including cost, durability and how each ages over time.

Placement

Porcelain veneers typically take two main visits.

  1. Preparing and recording the teeth

A thin layer of enamel is usually removed from the front of each tooth so the veneer sits naturally without looking bulky. Impressions or scans are taken and sent to a lab along with shade notes and photographs. Temporary veneers may be placed while you wait. Ask about planning these visits close together if travel from Walsh needs to be kept efficient.

  2. Bonding the final veneers

At the bonding appointment, the dentist checks each veneer’s fit and colour against your teeth, cleans the surfaces and bonds the veneers in place with a light-cured cement. Excess material is removed and the bite is checked carefully. You will have a chance to review the result in natural light and raise any concerns before you leave.

Maintenance

Veneers last longer with thoughtful habits.

  • Daily care and habits

Brush and clean between your teeth as usual, using a non-abrasive toothpaste if advised by the team. Avoid biting nails, pens, ice or other hard objects with veneered teeth. If you grind, wearing a night guard can help protect them from chipping. Regular cleanings keep the gum margins healthy, which also keeps the edges looking clean.

  • Future repair or replacement

Veneers may eventually chip, debond or need replacement as gums naturally change with age. Because enamel was removed, the teeth will usually always need some form of covering from then on. Ask about expected lifespan and future costs at the outset, so maintenance and eventual replacement are part of your planning rather than a surprise.

Veneer questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Are veneers permanent?

Porcelain veneers usually involve removing enamel, so the teeth will need covering long-term. The veneers themselves may need replacing in the future as they wear or gums change. Some composite options involve little or no preparation.

Do veneers look natural?

Well-planned veneers can look very natural. Shade, shape and translucency are chosen to suit your face and neighbouring teeth. A preview or mock-up helps you see the likely result beforehand and request changes if needed.

Can veneers fix crooked teeth?

They can disguise mild irregularities, but significant crowding or bite problems are often better treated with orthodontics first. The dentist will explain which approach suits your teeth and whether combining them makes sense for you.

Will my teeth be sensitive after veneers?

Some temporary sensitivity is possible after preparation and bonding, especially to cold. It usually settles within days or a few weeks. Contact the office if sensitivity is strong, worsening or persists beyond that period of time.

Can veneers be whitened?

No. Porcelain and composite do not respond to whitening products. If you want whiter natural teeth as well, whitening is usually done before the veneers are made, so they can be matched to the brighter shade.
