Caring for Townsend patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for TownsendThin shells, lasting change
Veneers are thin layers of porcelain or composite bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. They can change colour, shape, length and small alignment irregularities, and are often used for stains that do not respond to whitening, worn edges or uneven teeth. Because most veneers involve removing some enamel, the decision is usually a lasting one.
Patients travelling from Townsend can discuss veneers at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check the health of the teeth and gums, look at your bite and talk about the look you hope for, then explain whether veneers or a more conservative option is likely to give the result you want.

Is it the right choice?
Veneers can cover deep or patchy staining, mask chips and worn edges, close small gaps and give a more even shape to the front teeth. Porcelain resists staining well and can last many years with care. Composite veneers can sometimes be placed with little or no preparation and are easier to repair, though they tend to stain and chip more readily over time.
If your main concern is colour, whitening may be worth trying first, since it changes nothing permanently. Bonding or reshaping can deal with small chips. Significant crowding or bite problems are often better treated with orthodontics before anything cosmetic. Heavy grinding can crack veneers. The dentist will explain the alternatives and why veneers may or may not suit you.
Designing the smile
Before veneers are made, any decay or gum inflammation needs to be treated so the veneers sit on healthy teeth and gums. The dentist will take photographs, impressions or scans and study your bite and the way your lips frame your teeth when you talk and smile. They will ask how much change you want, from a subtle refresh to a clearly different look.
A mock-up or trial smile may be made so you can see the proposed shape and length on your own teeth before any enamel is touched. This is the moment to comment on proportions, colour and how the teeth look when you speak. Settling the details at this stage is far easier than trying to change finished veneers, and helps avoid disappointment later.
Preparation and fitting
For porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel is usually removed from the front of each tooth so the veneer can sit flush rather than looking bulky. This is normally done with local anaesthetic. Impressions or scans are then taken, and temporary veneers may be placed while the final ones are made. Temporaries can feel rough and should be treated gently.
At the fitting visit, the dentist tries each veneer in to check fit, colour and shape before anything is permanently attached. Once you are happy with the appearance, the veneers are bonded and hardened with a curing light, and any excess material is cleaned away. The bite is checked carefully. Mild sensitivity or an unfamiliar feel for a few days is normal.
Caring for veneers
Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth every day, since decay can still form at the edges of veneers where they meet the natural tooth. Avoid biting very hard foods with your front teeth, chewing ice or using your teeth to open packages. If you grind or clench, a night guard is often recommended to reduce stress on the veneers and the teeth underneath.
Veneers do not last forever. Over the years they may chip, show staining along the edges or need replacing as the gums naturally change. Regular checkups allow the dentist to keep an eye on them. Ask what eventual replacement might involve, since teeth that have been prepared for porcelain veneers will generally always need some kind of covering.

Porcelain veneers usually require removing some enamel, so the teeth will always need a covering afterwards. The veneers themselves may need replacing over time. It is a long-term commitment, so take time to consider it carefully before deciding.
Porcelain veneers can last many years with good care, while composite veneers may need repairs sooner. Lifespan depends on your bite, grinding habits and oral hygiene. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor them and catch small problems early.
Well-planned veneers can look very natural. The dentist considers shape, translucency and colour alongside your facial features and the teeth that are not being covered. Mock-ups help you preview the result and give feedback before anything is final.
Veneers can disguise minor irregularities, but significant crowding or bite problems are often better treated with orthodontics first, which may reduce how much enamel needs removing. The dentist can explain what veneers can realistically achieve for your teeth.
Porcelain resists staining well, though the edges and natural teeth nearby can still discolour. Composite veneers stain more easily. Regular cleanings and going easy on coffee, tea and red wine help keep veneers looking their best.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps and improve shape. Learn how it works, how long it lasts and how to care for it.
Small irregularities in tooth shape can sometimes be smoothed with reshaping. Learn when contouring suits Townsend patients and where its limits lie.
