Veneers are thin shells, usually porcelain or composite resin, bonded to the front of teeth. They can change colour, shape, length and minor alignment, and are often used for teeth that are chipped, worn, discoloured or uneven. Porcelain veneers usually require some enamel removal, making them a long-term commitment that deserves careful thought.
Selkirk patients considering veneers can start with a consultation at our Port Dover office, where the dentist examines the teeth, discusses goals and explains whether veneers are the best route. Sometimes whitening, bonding or orthodontic treatment achieves a similar result with less change to the natural teeth.

Is it right for you?
Veneers may help with stubborn discolouration that does not respond to whitening, chipped or worn edges, small gaps, irregular shapes and teeth that look short. They can create a more uniform appearance across several teeth. The dentist will examine the health of your teeth and gums and discuss whether your goals are realistic with veneers.
If teeth have active decay, gum disease or significant crowding, those may need treatment first. Heavy grinding can damage veneers. For mild concerns, more conservative treatments may be preferable. Ask the dentist to compare veneers with bonding, whitening and aligners so you understand the trade-offs before committing to permanent changes.
Planning the look
Bring photos of smiles you like and describe what you want to change. Discuss shade, shape, length and how natural you want the result to look. The dentist will consider your face, lips, gums and bite. Very white or very large veneers may not suit everyone, and the dentist can help you find a balanced, realistic goal.
Some practices use photographs, models or a temporary mock-up to preview the planned changes. Ask whether this is available and what it can show. Previewing helps you give feedback before anything permanent is done. Take time at this stage, because changes are easier to make before the final veneers are created.
The procedure
For porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel is typically removed from the front of each tooth, often under local anaesthetic. Impressions or scans are taken and the shade is confirmed. Temporary veneers may be placed. Composite veneers are often built directly on the teeth in a single visit, with less or no enamel removal.
When the final porcelain veneers are ready, the dentist tries them in to check fit, colour and shape before bonding. You can review the appearance and raise concerns at this point. Once bonded, the bite is checked and any excess material removed. Some sensitivity may occur initially and usually settles.
Long-term care
Avoid biting hard objects like ice, pens or fingernails, which can chip veneers. If you grind your teeth, wear a night guard as recommended. Porcelain resists staining well, but composite may discolour over time. Brush and clean between teeth daily, as the natural teeth beneath and around veneers can still develop decay.
Veneers do not last forever and may eventually need repair or replacement. Composite veneers often need touch-ups more frequently than porcelain. Attend regular checkups so the dentist can monitor the edges, gums and bite. Report chips, loose veneers or changes in fit promptly so they can be assessed before further damage occurs.
Planning your appointment
Book a cosmetic consultation at our Port Dover office and describe what you would like to change. Mention any event dates, so the dentist can explain whether the timeline is realistic.
Bring reference photos and let the team know about grinding, sensitivity or previous cosmetic work on your front teeth.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Porcelain veneers usually involve removing some enamel, so the teeth will typically always need a covering. The veneers themselves may need replacing over time. Composite veneers may involve less preparation. The dentist will explain what applies to your plan.
They can, when shape, shade and proportions are planned carefully. Discuss your preferences during planning and ask about previewing the result. The dentist will aim for a look that suits your face and other teeth.
Porcelain veneers can last many years with care, while composite may need maintenance sooner. Habits like grinding or biting hard objects shorten their lifespan. Regular checkups help monitor their condition.
Whitening does not change the colour of veneers. If you want whiter natural teeth, whitening is usually done before veneers are matched. Discuss timing with the dentist during planning.
Porcelain is generally more stain-resistant and durable but often requires more preparation and two visits. Composite can be placed in one visit with less preparation but may stain or chip more easily. The dentist can compare them for you.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps and improve shape. Selkirk residents can ask if it fits their smile in Port Dover.
Small adjustments to uneven or pointed edges can refine a smile. Selkirk patients can ask whether tooth reshaping is suitable at our Port Dover office.
