A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front of a tooth. Veneers can cover stubborn discolouration, close small gaps, mask minor chips and make teeth look more even. Porcelain veneers usually require removing a thin layer of enamel, which means the decision is generally irreversible.
Anyone from Renton thinking about veneers can start with a consultation at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine your teeth, discuss your goals, explain how veneers compare with whitening, bonding or orthodontics and give you a realistic sense of the process, maintenance and lifespan.

Is it the right choice?
Veneers can help with teeth that are discoloured despite whitening, slightly misshapen, worn or chipped, or have small gaps. They can change the appearance of several teeth at once, creating a more uniform look. The dentist will show you which teeth might benefit and what could realistically be achieved. Photos can help compare before and after.
Heavy grinding, gum disease, significant decay or crowding may make veneers less suitable or require other treatment first. If your main concern is alignment, orthodontics may be more appropriate. Because porcelain veneers usually involve permanently altering enamel, it is worth considering more conservative options before deciding. Whitening or bonding may meet some goals more simply.
Porcelain or composite
Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory and are known for their stain resistance and natural translucency. They generally require two or more visits and enamel preparation. With good care they can last many years, but they can chip or debond, and replacement eventually involves another procedure. Factor that into your decision from the start.
Composite veneers are built directly on the tooth, often in one visit, and may require less enamel removal. They can be repaired more easily but tend to stain and wear faster than porcelain. The dentist will explain which material suits your goals, bite and preferences, and how long each typically lasts with good care. Ask about upkeep.
The process
Planning may include photographs, impressions and a preview or mock-up of the proposed shape. For porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the front of each tooth, and impressions are taken. Temporary veneers may be placed while the final ones are made. Treat temporaries gently, avoiding sticky or very hard foods until then.
At the fitting visit, the dentist checks each veneer for colour, shape and fit before bonding it in place. Excess cement is removed and the bite is checked. You will be given care instructions. It may take a few days to get used to the feel of the new surfaces against your lips and tongue.
Living with veneers
Avoid biting hard objects such as pens, ice and fingernails, and do not use your teeth to open packages. If you grind, a night guard may be recommended. Wear a mouthguard for contact sports. These steps help prevent chips and cracks in the veneers and the teeth underneath them. Mention any habits you are unsure about.
Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth daily. Regular checkups and cleanings allow the dentist to check the edges of veneers, gums and underlying teeth. Report any looseness, chips or changes in how your bite feels promptly. Small issues are usually easier to address when they are caught early on.

Porcelain veneers usually require removing enamel, so the tooth will always need some covering afterward. The veneers themselves may need replacing after many years. Composite veneers may be more reversible depending on preparation needed. Ask before deciding.
Longevity depends on material, bite forces, habits and care. Porcelain veneers often last longer than composite. The dentist can explain typical lifespans and factors that affect durability, such as grinding and how the teeth meet.
No. Veneers do not change colour with whitening products. If you want whiter teeth overall, whitening is usually done before veneers so the shade can be matched to your lighter natural teeth. Plan the order together.
Preparation is usually done with local anaesthetic, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some temporary sensitivity is possible afterward and usually settles within a short time. Composite veneers often need little or no freezing.
When carefully planned, veneers can look natural. Shade, shape and translucency are chosen to suit your face and surrounding teeth. Discuss your preferences in detail during planning, and ask to see a mock-up where possible.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to fix chips, small gaps and uneven edges. Renton patients can find out if it suits their smile at our Port Dover office.
Small edge refinements can even out a smile without fillings or crowns. Renton patients can ask if enamel contouring suits their teeth in Port Dover.
