A veneer is a thin shell, usually porcelain or composite, bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Veneers can improve the colour of teeth that do not respond to whitening, close small gaps, lengthen worn edges and even out shapes. Porcelain veneers typically require some enamel removal, which makes them a permanent decision.
If you are in Pine Grove and considering veneers, a consultation at our Port Dover office is the starting point. The dentist will look at your teeth, gums and bite and explain whether veneers or a more conservative option suits your goals.

Is it right for you
Stubborn discolouration, chipped or worn front teeth, minor misalignment and irregular shapes are common reasons for veneers. They can create a uniform appearance across several teeth. Healthy gums and enough enamel are needed for bonding, and the dentist will check for decay, gum disease and grinding before recommending them.
If your concern is mostly colour, whitening may be enough. Small chips may be repaired with bonding. Crowding might be better addressed with aligners. Heavy grinders may need protection first. Ask the dentist to compare veneers with these options in terms of tooth preservation, longevity and maintenance.
Design and preview
The dentist will discuss tooth length, width, shape and shade in relation to your face, lips and gums. Very bright or very uniform veneers can look unnatural on some people, so consider what suits you. Bring photos of smiles you like, but expect advice about what works with your own features.
A diagnostic wax-up or temporary mock-up may let you preview the planned changes. This is the time to request adjustments. Taking time at this stage reduces the chance of disappointment, because once enamel has been prepared, returning to your original teeth is not possible.
Treatment steps
At the preparation visit, the teeth are numbed and a thin layer of enamel is removed from the front surface. Impressions or scans are taken and sent to a laboratory. Temporary veneers may be placed to protect the teeth and give a sense of the new shape. Treat temporaries gently, avoiding hard or sticky foods.
When the veneers are ready, they are tried in to check fit and colour before being bonded with a special adhesive. Excess material is removed and the bite is checked. A follow-up visit may be scheduled to review how the veneers feel and look once you have had a few days to adjust.
Living with veneers
Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth daily, since the teeth underneath can still decay at the edges. Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, pens or fingernails. If you grind or clench, wear a night guard to protect the veneers from chipping or loosening.
Porcelain veneers can last many years, while composite veneers may need repair or replacement sooner. All veneers will eventually need replacing. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the margins and gums. Report chips, rough edges or sensitivity so they can be addressed promptly.
Planning your appointment
Book a cosmetic consultation at our Port Dover office to discuss veneers. The dentist will examine your teeth and explain options, number of visits and expected maintenance.
Bring photos of smiles you like and any previous dental records. If you are considering whitening, mention it so treatments can be sequenced.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Porcelain veneers usually involve removing some enamel, so the tooth will always need a veneer or other covering afterward. The veneer itself will eventually need replacement, which is part of the long-term commitment to consider.
Porcelain is quite stain-resistant, while composite can discolour over time. The natural teeth around veneers can still stain, so the dentist may suggest whitening before treatment to set the shade you want to match.
Veneers can mask minor misalignment, but significant crowding or bite problems are usually better treated with orthodontics. The dentist will explain which approach suits your teeth and protects their long-term health.
The teeth are usually numbed during preparation. Some sensitivity afterward is common and tends to settle within days. Persistent discomfort should be reported to the office so the dentist can check the bite and fit.
It depends on how many teeth show when you smile and what you want to change. Some people need one or two; others choose several. The dentist will discuss what creates a balanced, natural result for you.
Bonding adds tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps or reshape edges. Pine Grove patients can see what it suits and how long it typically lasts.
Small uneven edges or points can sometimes be smoothed in a single visit. Pine Grove patients can learn when tooth reshaping fits and when it is not advised.
