Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain or composite bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Veneers can mask stubborn discolouration, close small gaps, lengthen worn teeth and even out shape. Porcelain veneers usually require removing a thin layer of enamel, which means the change is generally considered permanent and the teeth will always need some covering.
Residents of Lynedoch thinking about veneers can arrange a consultation at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine your teeth and bite, discuss whether more conservative options might achieve your goals and walk you through the visits involved if veneers turn out to be the right choice.

Are veneers right
Veneers can help with teeth that are discoloured despite whitening, slightly misshapen, chipped, worn or unevenly spaced. They work best on healthy teeth with good gum support and enough enamel for bonding. The dentist will check for decay, gum disease and bite issues before recommending them.
Whitening, bonding, reshaping or orthodontic treatment may address some concerns with less tooth preparation. Heavy grinding or significant crowding may make veneers less predictable. Ask the dentist to compare options openly, including how much natural tooth each would preserve and how long results are expected to last.
Designing your smile
Discuss how bright you want your teeth to be, how much shape change you prefer and whether you want a natural or more uniform look. The dentist considers your lip line, facial features and gum contours. Bringing photos of smiles you like can help illustrate preferences.
Depending on the case, a wax model or trial veneers may let you preview the planned changes before preparation begins. This is a good time to ask for adjustments. Taking time at the planning stage often leads to a result you feel more comfortable with long term.
The process
After freezing, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the front of each tooth to make room for the veneer. Impressions or scans are taken and sent to the lab. Temporary veneers may be placed. They are less durable, so avoid biting hard foods and contact the office if one comes loose.
At the bonding appointment, the dentist checks the fit and colour of each veneer before attaching it. The teeth are cleaned and conditioned, and the veneers bonded with a light-cured cement. Excess material is removed and the bite checked. You will be able to review the result before leaving.
Living with veneers
Brush and floss as usual, paying attention to the gumline where veneers meet the tooth. Avoid biting fingernails, ice or hard objects with your front teeth. If you grind or clench, a night guard is often recommended. Porcelain resists staining well, but the natural teeth and edges still need care.
Veneers can chip, debond or wear over many years and may eventually need replacement. Gum recession can expose the edge of a veneer. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor margins and fit. Report any rough edge, looseness or sensitivity so it can be checked early.
Planning your appointment
Book a consultation at our Port Dover office and explain what you would like to improve. Ask how many visits are usually involved so you can plan your schedule and travel.
Bring photos showing the look you hope for and any whitening history, since shade planning depends on it.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Porcelain veneers usually involve removing some enamel, so the tooth will always need a covering. Veneers themselves may need replacement over time. Some composite veneers require less preparation.
Porcelain is highly resistant to staining, while composite can discolour over time. The natural tooth around the veneer can still stain, so good hygiene and regular cleanings remain important.
No. Whitening products do not change the colour of porcelain or composite. If you want brighter teeth, whitening is usually done before veneers so their shade can be matched.
Many last for years with good care, though lifespan varies with habits, bite and gum health. The dentist can discuss expectations for your situation during the consultation.
There may be a short adjustment period as you get used to the new shape. If your bite feels off or speech changes do not settle, contact the office so adjustments can be considered.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps or reshape edges. Lynedoch patients can ask our Port Dover dentist if bonding fits their smile.
Small uneven edges or a slightly pointed tooth can sometimes be refined by reshaping. Lynedoch patients can ask our Port Dover dentist whether contouring suits them.
