A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Veneers can mask stubborn discolouration, close small gaps, lengthen worn teeth and even out shapes that look irregular. Because they often require removing a thin layer of enamel, they are usually considered a permanent commitment that deserves careful planning.
If you are in Langton and considering veneers, a consultation at our Port Dover office helps you understand whether they suit your teeth and goals. The dentist will examine your bite, gums and existing restorations and talk about alternatives such as whitening, bonding or aligners before recommending anything.

Good candidates
Veneers are commonly used for teeth with deep stains that do not respond to whitening, chips, small gaps, worn edges or minor irregularities in shape or alignment. They can create a more uniform look across the front teeth. The dentist will check that the teeth and gums are healthy, since decay or gum disease must be treated before veneers.
People who grind heavily, bite their nails or have very little enamel may not be good candidates, as veneers can chip or debond under strain. Significant crowding or bite problems may be better corrected with orthodontics first. The dentist will be honest about whether veneers are likely to last in your mouth or whether another option makes more sense.
Porcelain or composite
Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory. They resist staining well, reflect light much like natural enamel and are generally durable. They usually require two or more visits and some enamel removal. If a porcelain veneer chips or breaks, it typically needs to be replaced rather than repaired. Ask about expected lifespan and maintenance.
Composite veneers are built up directly on the tooth, often in a single visit, and may require less enamel removal. They cost less initially but are more prone to staining and chipping and may need polishing or repair more often. They can be a good option for people who want a less invasive or more reversible change.
The process
Photographs, impressions or scans and a discussion of your goals help design the veneers. A mock-up may show the proposed shape before any tooth is changed. For porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel is removed and impressions are taken. Temporary veneers may be placed while the laboratory makes the final ones, giving you a preview of the new shape.
At the fitting appointment, each veneer is checked for fit, shape and colour before being bonded with a special adhesive and cured with light. The dentist adjusts the bite and polishes the edges. You may need a short follow-up visit to check how the veneers feel and how your gums are responding after the first few weeks.
Long-term care
Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and floss every day. Avoid biting directly into very hard foods, chewing ice or using your teeth as tools. If you grind your teeth or play contact sports, wear a guard. Limit staining drinks, especially with composite veneers, and rinse with water after coffee, tea or red wine.
At regular checkups, the dentist examines the veneers, the edges where they meet the tooth and the health of your gums. Decay can still develop around veneers if plaque is left behind. Over time, veneers may need replacing due to wear, chipping or gum changes. Ask the dentist what to expect so you can plan for future maintenance.

Porcelain veneers usually involve removing some enamel, so the tooth will always need some form of covering afterwards. The veneers themselves may eventually need replacing. Composite veneers can sometimes be done with little or no enamel removal.
Well-planned veneers can look very natural, with colour, shape and translucency matched to your face and other teeth. Discuss the look you want with the dentist, whether subtle and natural or brighter and more uniform.
No. Veneers do not change colour with whitening products. If you want whiter natural teeth as well, whiten before veneers are made so the shade can be matched. Otherwise, veneers may stand out against teeth that change colour.
Porcelain veneers often last many years with good care, while composite veneers may need repair or replacement sooner. Grinding, biting habits and gum health all affect longevity. Regular checkups help identify problems early, while repair is still simple.
Some people notice mild sensitivity after enamel is prepared, which usually settles. If sensitivity continues or worsens, contact the office. The dentist can check the fit and bonding and look for other possible causes of the discomfort.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps and reshape edges. Langton patients can learn what it can do and how long it holds up.
Small uneven edges or a slightly long tooth can sometimes be smoothed in one visit. Langton patients can ask whether enamel contouring suits them in Port Dover.
